Abandoned Chinese baby rescued from toilet pipe
Source: Reuters
Firefighters in eastern China have rescued an abandoned newborn baby boy lodged in a sewage pipe directly beneath a toilet commode, state television reported, in a case which has sparked anger on social media sites.
There are frequent reports in Chinese media of babies being abandoned, often shortly after birth, a problem attributed variously to young mothers unaware they were pregnant, the birth of an unwanted girl in a society which puts greater value on boys or China's strict family planning rules.
In the latest case the infant was found in the sewage pipe in a residential building in Jinhua in the wealthy coastal province of Zhejiang on Saturday afternoon after residents reported the sound of a baby crying, state television said late on Monday.
Firefighters had to remove the pipe and take it to a nearby hospital, where doctors carefully cut around it to rescue the baby boy inside, the report said.

This is unbelievable. I don't know who's worse, Kermit Gosnell, Melissa Drexler the "prom mom", or the scumbag parents of this poor baby.

Societies that shame young pregnant girls without husbands have to consider that this stuff is going to happen from time to time. It's the price of being allowed to shame the girls.

(17,301 posts)we should NOT be surprised to see more and more babies disposed of this way.
During Jesus' times, dumping babies in the garbage and on river banks was a very common form of birth control. Since the "religious" right wants to outlaw abortions and birth control, the one remaining method for women to avoid unwanted children is to dump them. And most anti-choice and anti-birth control people don't really seem to mind this final birth control method. Because if you rescued a baby from the garbage dump during ancient Roman times, the child was your slave for life.

(17,276 posts)His wife went along too. They were shocked at the way people behave in public. Everybody pushes and shoves to get where they want to go. Instead of lining up at a public restroom, everybody just pushes their way in--survival of the fittest. The handicapped or old ones haven't a chance. Same with traffic: they had a driver, but he drove like a maniac with no apparent regard to any rules of the road--and they all drive that way. Their impression is that there are simply so many, many people, that life just doesn't mean much. Or one individual's life.
The other thing that shocked them was the pollution. The air is a constant dirty haze. The sun has no chance to shine, except through a haze of smog. And they'd find soot settling on their bodies after being outside. There is no wildlife in the city of Bejiing--no birds or squirrels and hardly anything growing like gardens. Just miles and miles of buildings and pavement. To make matters worse with the polluted air, everyone smokes!

(135,425 posts)Maybe the pregnant person was mentally ill.
Maybe the pregnant person was an unmarried teen and afraid to tell her parents.
Maybe the pregnant person already had a child and couldn't afford the tax on a 2nd one---China has a One Child policy, after all.
There's no way of knowing what the issue is until the person who gave birth to that child is located--if they ever are.

(8,032 posts)Your hypotheticals pale before the graphic fact that a live baby was flushed head first down the toilet. I have no problem judging this as utterly fucked up, right here, right now. The "issues" of who did it excuse nothing. If the flusher thought their own issues were more important, then by definition they thought the child's life cheap in comparison. Which was my point. A baby deserves a parent who thinks their life is precious, and to be guarded at all costs.
Is a worse denigration of innocent life possible? Flushing a crying baby into a sewer pipe!?!
MADem
(135,425 posts)and might not be in her right mind. That baby was likely delivered into that sewer pipe by someone who was alone and not thinking straight.
It's not a question of "whose issues are more important," it's that anyone who could do such a thing is plainly not of sound mind--this is not how normal humans behave. Not knowing the flusher, you have absolutely no way of "knowing" what she might have thought--she might have been mentally ill, psychotic, even, or in dreadful fear for her own life.
It's just not valid to overlay your culture and your personal views on this person. We simply do not know her motivations--or even if she had the mental capacity to have motivations--for all we know, she could be a developmentally delayed person who was interefered with and no one realized she was pregnant owing to overweight--we simply Do Not Know.
I am happy the child was rescued, but I remain concerned that there's someone out there who may be in extremis after this delivery and may also be in need of medical and psychiatric care.

BEIJING The mother of the Chinese newborn trapped in a sewer pipe in a stunning ordeal caught on video had raised the initial alarm and was present for the entire two-hour rescue but did not admit giving birth until confronted by police, reports said Wednesday.
The state-run, Hangzhou-based newspaper Dushikuaibao said police became suspicious when they found baby toys and blood-stained toilet paper in the 22-year-old womans rented room, in the building where Saturdays rescue occurred in eastern China.
The woman, whose name was not revealed in state media reports, confessed to police when they asked her to undergo a medical checkup.
The woman told police she could not afford an abortion and secretly delivered the child Saturday afternoon in the toilet. She said she tried to catch the baby but he slipped into the sewer line and that she alerted her landlord of the trapped baby after she could not pull the child out, the state-run, Jinhua-based Zhezhong News said....Zhezhong News said the woman is a high school graduate who works at a restaurant in the Zhejiang province city of Jinhua. She said she became pregnant after a one-night stand with a man who later denied any responsibility. The woman did not reveal the pregnancy to her parents. She also said she wanted to raise the child but had no idea how to do it, according to local reports.....
If the mother hadn't alerted authorities, the child might have died. But she was living in fear--of her family, of her status, and of the authorities.
