Don’t join military, McCain warns women
June 06, 2013

WASHINGTON: Sen. John McCain told the top US military chiefs he could not advise women to join the service with a sexual-assault scourge the military has not contained.

“Just last night, a woman came to me and said her daughter wanted to join the military and could I give my unqualified support for her doing so. I could not,” the Arizona Republican, a Vietnam veteran and ex-prisoner of war decorated with Purple Heart, told the uniformed chiefs of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

“I cannot overstate my disgust and disappointment over continued reports of sexual misconduct in our military,” said McCain, who followed his father and grandfather, both four-star admirals, into the Navy.

McCain, the only living ex-presidential candidate other than John Kerry to have been decorated with the Purple Heart, said: “We’ve been talking about this issue for years, and talk is insufficient.”

It's advice to avoid service until the problem is solved. I figure his heart i in the right place, but the phrasing and thrust seems to place the onus on the women. I don't think that's his intent, but I don't think he can help sounding like a paternalist asshat, either.

If he took center stage in pursuing the problem of sexual abuse in the military, he'd actually regain some of the respect I held for him all those years ago... but... he won't do that.

Don't attempt a career.
Don't wear a short skirt.
Don't be out after dark.

Second verse, same as the first.
Any chance of this clown getting up in front of the troops and talking about consent/rape? Encouraging people to report rapists. Encouraging people in the chain of command to properly handle and prosecute these cases?

Oh fuck no. Just tell the women not to join. Problem solved!

9. I don't mean to be rude, but McCain was renowned as a (rhymes with bore, starts with a w) master

on the Hill when he was Director of the Office of Legislative Affairs. That's not 'my' term, it's one that was used to refer to him back in the day, usually by near-peers and juniors, with a note of admiration in their voices (again, not an endorsement, I am just reporting, here).

I'm sure some of his "conquests" wore uniforms, too. He also blazed a trail through the civilian contingents as well.

He was a pig who cut a wide, alcohol-fueled swathe. It's why his wife was happy to give him that divorce--she said he wanted to be 18 again--and she didn't.

I find it odd that all of a sudden he's such a prude about women in the military; perhaps, because, in hindsight, he believes they need to be protected...from people like HIM?

What shitty, lazy, sloppy reporting--Bob Dole was a Presidential candidate, he's alive, and he got the Purple Heart. In fact, he got TWO of them. So McCain is not "the only living ex-presidential candidate other than John Kerry to have been decorated with the Purple Heart."

And if you are that disgusted, McCain, how about you get in front of as many microphones about it as you did about Benghazi..and now Syria. Don't talk about sending any of our troops to war without fixing this rape plague first.

It was ok if they were nurses or secretaries, but women on the front (or middle, or back) lines was absolutely unwanted. So now with all the sexual assaults, they can go back to their preferred stance -- no women in the military. They are determined to get their way, one way or another.
