WASHINGTONThe government on Wednesday designated six leaders of the violent street gang MS-13 as international criminals, stepping up a crackdown on the sprawling U.S. and Central American gang's finances.
The Treasury Department in October designated MS-13, or Mara Salvatrucha, as an international criminal organization. The Obama administration said that makes the gang subject to penalties by the Office of Foreign Assets Control and gives the U.S. an opportunity to hinder MS-13's ability to funnel money to its leaders in El Salvador or launder criminal proceeds through otherwise legitimate businesses.
Adding the names of six of the gang's purported leaders allows the U.S. to target their bank accounts individually.
The men added to the transnational criminal organization designation are: Moris Alexander Bercian Manchon, 28; Jose Misael Cisneros Rodriguez, 37; Marvin Geovanny Monterrosa-Larios, 39; Moises Humberto Rivera-Luna, 44; Saul Antonio Turcios Angel, 35; and Borromeo Enrique Henriquez Solorzano, 34.
All are from El Salvador. Turcios, Rivera-Luna and Monterrosa-Larios have been indicted in the United States on criminal charges. Rivera-Luna and Monterrosa-Larios are jailed in El Salvador and Turcios' whereabouts are unknown. Federal court records do not list attorneys of any of the three men.

(6,699 posts)Let's not get carried away with labeling the PD's as ALL bad apples. We need to single out those that are, and either get them OUT of law enforcement, or put them behind bars as thugs and criminals that they really are.
I understand that your post was probably being a bit sarcastic; but this nation is doing such a fine job of blowing up members of Al Qaeda, and tens to hundreds of innocent human beings, that we are actually multiplying the hatred and enemies of this nation and the west. The families and friends of those maimed and killed become the new Al Qaeda of tomorrow.
I'm afraid that if we lose sight of the few bad apples on the police force, and start to paint the entire police department of our large cities as "enemies of the people", we are going to be getting less protection and more anger and hatred than we want from the good police that are insulted by such claims.
It's the same as labeling TEACHERS as lazy, pathetic public employees who are only interested in getting a pay check, and could care less about educating our young. We all know, or should, that that type of label is only referring to a tiny handful, if any, of the teachers who struggle everyday to educate our children and comply with the worthless requirements to test and measure their success by a foolish test.

You are the childish immature one - do you even live in this country?

You sound like Richard Nixon.

The "lies" part is baffling, as well as the assumption you support "the thugs." I'll bet it got a lot of double takes by people wondering if they missed something.

(429 posts)They don't seem to have the same urge to target the White Supremacists or anti government extremists. I gather brown skin is a factor.

(2,484 posts)MS-13 is insanely violent. What is happening in LA right now between the traditional African American gangs and MS-13 is all out war.
As others mentioned, going after leaders is not effective. We need to take away the income source.....drugs.
The hate groups you mentioned generally skirt the law, so it is tough to "target" them for arrest. They tend to have it all culminate in one hate-filled moment, which is tough to stop.

(13,184 posts)The origins of MS-13 are rooted in the diaspora of Salvadorans in the 1980s, as Ronald Reagan and the Congress spent $4 billion supporting murderous right-wing anti-communists against a popular leftist revolution there. Hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans fled, many of them ending up in Los Angeles, where they learned American street gang ways. And now, here we are.
