Southern Baptists OK Quitting the Boy Scouts
Source: The Advocate
The Southern Baptist Convention approved a resolution today opposing and expressing disappointment in the Boy Scouts of America's recent decision to allow openly gay youth to participate in the organization.
While the resolution does not require individual Baptist churches within the convention to cut ties with any Scouting troops, it does express solidarity with churches and leaders who decide to do so, according to the Associated Press. The resolution also calls on the BSA to remove executive and board leaders who voted to allow openly gay youth and adults to serve within the organization without consulting the religious institutions that sponsor many local troops.
In May, the BSA reversed its long-standing ban on "open or avowed homosexual" youth within its ranks, but continues to bar openly gay or lesbian adults from serving as leaders or volunteers with the organization.

(3,596 posts)The Boy Scouts are NOT a religious institution. They should NEVER have been affiliated with religious institutions in my opinion. While it may have been convenient at times this was really not an appropriate alignment.

(2,203 posts)and the father of two Eagles and a brother of an Eagle Scout I hate to see the Baptist church take this stand. I understand why they do, and I don't like their discriminatory nature. The thing I've noticed in 40plus years of being involved in Scouting is that most kids and adults that belong to a troop, that is sponsored by a church, are seldom members of that church. So I see many of the Baptist Churches pulling out of BSA, but not all of them as a loss for the Troops. I was glad, BSA did the right thing, by opening our doors to homosexual boys. Now to get them in the next century to open up for adult leader admission too. That will not happen anytime soon, but eventually it will.
