Tea Party Aims Anger at IRS, NSA and Immigration at D.C. Rally

By ABBY D. PHILLIP (@abbydphillip) AND JOAN E. GREVE
June 19, 2013- 7 min. ago

The Tea Party is back in Washington and they are madder than ever. Backed by more than a dozen lawmakers from the House and the Senate, thousands of Tea Party activists gathered on the Capitol lawn to vent their frustration with the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative groups, the prospects of a comprehensive immigration reform bill passing through Congress, and the National Security Agency's surveillance program.

"They did all they could to rob us of our first amendment rights by silencing our speech, stifling our assembly and stopping our petitions," said Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder and national coordinator of Tea Party Patriots. "Ladies and gentlemen, ours is a government that is too big and too powerful."

"We are going to throw (the IRS) over like a box of British tea," added Rep. Tom Graves, R-Ga. The rally, which was mirrored by a separate Tea Party event opposing immigration reform on the other side of the Capitol, also appeared to be a show of strength by the movement, which has little in the way of a central organization but plenty of anti-government fervor.

"I'm a little confused, The New York Times told me the Tea Party was dead," said Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. "The IRS told me the Tea Party is dead." While investigations of the IRS in the House have yet to turn up any evidence that the practice of targeting conservative groups was directed by Washington, the consensus in the crowd and among activists was that the IRS's latest misdeeds is just more evidence that the agency should no longer exist. "The very best solution is, we need to abolish the IRS," Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., offered to loud applause. "We need to take every one of those IRS agents and put them on our Southern border."

I was searching for the latest on the IRS scandal with key words IRS and Tea Party and nothing about it on the 1st page anyway. Sounds like the corporate media and/or Google are suppressing it.

after eight years of cheerleading it. Fucking pathetic douche bags. As for the IRS, that's a non-scandal because those goofy bastards shouldn't have any tax exempt status anyways.

I can't believe there wasn't 1 march against the impending action in Syria. The media must be ignoring it.

I saw nothing in Phoenix but that's Arizona for ya. Besides it's just too fricken hot to protest.

But NO demonstrations in DC Boston New York or LA San Fran and the rest of the reliable blue areas against involvement in that civil war between two ancient tribes?

The silence from the press is deafening, and telling.

Most of them are over age 65 so they won't be around long enough to build a party. The other who are younger are so dumb that you can tell them any right wing conspiracy and they will believe it, especially if it is on Fox News.

tea partiers will celebrate but but republicans will see the electoral hand writing on the wall. Of course immigration reform is good policy so it is hard to wish for its defeat.

Hmmm, didn't we see this movie before.

Oh well, nothing to worry about. Let's continue bashing President Obama on DU and ignore the "real" enemy to freedom, progress and prosperity.
