Could Paula Deen's words bring down her empire?

Source: AP-Excite

By DAVID BAUDER

NEW YORK (AP) - Paula Deen should hope for more fans like Jennifer Everett of Tyler, Texas, who carried a shopping bag filled with $53 worth of merchandise from the celebrity chef's Georgia store on Thursday. A day earlier, it was revealed that Deen admitted during questioning in a lawsuit that she had slurred blacks in the past.

"Who hasn't ever said that word?" Everett said. "I don't think any less of her. She's super friendly. She's a warm person who wouldn't hurt a fly."

Deen's admission that she had used the N-word in the past wasn't the first time the queen of comfort food's mouth had gotten her into big trouble. She said in 2012 that for three years she hid her Type 2 diabetes while continuing to cook the calorie-laden food that's bad for people like her.

Hypocrisy is one thing, hostility another. From her days as a divorced mother selling bag lunches on the streets of Savannah, Deen has parlayed her folksy, Southern gal charm into an empire that includes Food Network TV shows, cookbooks, magazines and a wide swath of product endorsements.

This 2006 file photo originally released by the Food Network shows celebrity chef Paula Dean. It was revealed that Deen admitted during questioning in a lawsuit that she had slurred blacks in the past. It's the second time the queen of comfort food's mouth has gotten her into big trouble. She revealed in 2012 that for three years she hid her Type 2 diabetes while continuing to cook the calorie-laden food that's bad for people like her. The Food Network, which began airing "Paula's Home Cooking" in 2002, has said it does not tolerate discrimination and is looking at the situation. Deen's other show, "Paula's Best Dishes," started at the network in 2008. She's one of the longest-running and most recognizable of the network stars, although her show airs in daytime _ not prime-time. (AP Photo/ Food Network, file)

but it would probably be hard to find a lot of 66-year-old white people in georgia who never said that word. just saying.

ETA - when I wrote the above I thought it was something that she had said pre-civil rights era, I didn't know that she had continued to use that language. There is no excuse for it. Not that there was any excuse of using it back then, but I know a lot of people did, so it wouldn't surprise me that a person of that age from that place had used it in their life. But most people who had used it learned and changed.

The article only says she admitted to using the N-word "in the past". We're left to wonder if this was something she said recently, or if it's something she said when she was a teenager in 1955.

I have nothing but disdain for that. I haven't seen the comments you mention, but I have nothing but disdain for those types of comments.

I am 45 and I remember as a child the generation older than me using that language, and it seems to me that a lot of people in that generation used it at some point in their life. That's what I was saying. But most of them learned as society progressed during their lifetime. There is no excuse for it today.

I mentioned georgia because of time (which I thought was pre-60s) and place, not because I said anything about everyone being ignorant, backwards, bigots.

I'm writing from my home in Chattanooga, TN.

the time or place. Too many people think that one cannot be racist unless one utters that horrible word. But being a racist isn't just about using the N-word; it's about feelings or expressions of superiority simply because one's skin color is different from another.

see how this lawsuit plays out before they decide, imo.

If you read her deposition, she is an individual who does not have the integrity to apologize for
her hateful racist comments. I do find her responses calculating and the purpose appears an
attempt to appeal to people that she did not "intend" to be racist...it's just that the N word
is what comes to mind from time to time and dreaming of a plantation wedding scenario is
something most mainstream people would fancy for themselves. Her lawyers should rethink
their strategy....and I do hope it all blows up in her face.

Hey Y'all, Boycott Paula Deen and Smithfield Ham

Diane Rehm just interviewed Paula Deen on the radio, promoting her latest cookbook Christmas with Paula Deen. I am sure that by the time it was over, Paula was sorry that she had agreed to the interview.

Although I only caught the last few minutes, what I heard was Diane questioning Paula about conditions at the Smithfield Packing factory in Tarheel, North Carolina. Paula Deen is a paid spokesperson for Smithfield, promoting their product at every appearance she makes. Meanwhile, Smithfield has become notorious for its dangerous and otherwise inhuman working conditions, as well as it's relentless anti-union activity. As Chicago Sun Times columnist Teresa Puente stated in a recent article, "The conditions at the company have been documented by Human Rights Watch, the National Labor Relations Board and OSHA. They are so notorious that last year the Chicago City Council passed a resolution critical of Smithfield."http://www.suntimes.com/...

So, what was the beloved Food Network chef's response to Diane's questions, as well as those of the obviously many people who took the time to call in and to write e-mails to Diane Reems, so that she could ask Paula about Smithfield, and her involvement with them?

"I have no particular expertise in these [labor] matters. I only have expertise in how ham tastes, and how it is processed." Essentially the Joe Klein defense we all have become accustomed to. If Paula were to use her head for more than just eating, she might realize that what she is saying is that she has relinquished her role as a human being, and is shutting her eyes to human suffering, because someone is paying her to do it.

" I have met with workers at the plant, and they have never expressed to me any unhappiness." Yes, Paula has apparently sat down and met with the largely black and Latino factory workers of Smithfield and they have expressed nothing but happiness to her. They have never indicated that they did not love their jobs, nor that they wanted a union.

I remember she had FL Michelle Obama on her in 2008.. but, she told on her.. lol

The TV star told the Washington Examiner that she and Michelle had more in common than you might expect.

She said: 'I did a show with Michelle and I just loved being with her.

'She probably ate more than any other guest I've ever had on the show.

'She kept eating even during commercials.'

After complimenting Michelle on her slim figure, Paula taught her how to fry shrimp during a TV segment in September 2008, shortly before the presidential election.

It's so deeply indoctrinated (which is not surprising given her background) that she is not even aware that it's at the root of suggestions such as having all black male waiters at a wedding. She has the means to educate herself and if she is willing to do that and speak openly and frankly about it, then she can make strides towards greater enlightenment. However, if she just wants to sweep this under the rug to keep the $$$$ rolling in, she will have proven her accusers to be correct in their assessment of her.

at least once. Two Christmases ago I accompanied a friend of mine and her husband to visit her cousin in AL (near Auburn University). She's around Paula's age. Lovely woman, charming and a great hostess. At some point we were talking to her daughter about a car we saw in a hair salon's parking lot. It was a conversation piece. Someone had attached steel eyelashes above the headlights. I mentioned that it probably belonged to one of the stylists. She responded no, more likely it belonged to a "non swimming Democrat". Her daughter agreed. I didn't know what the heck she was talking about. I asked my friend later and she explained it to me. My friend is a 60s hippie. She said that she loved her family but that she wished they still didn't have those long held beliefs of the South.

The rest of my planned collection of Paula Deen cooking pots and pans is now scrapped. I already have the one skillet, bought before I found all this crap out. So, that will be it. I won't be buying any more Paula Deen branded stuff now. It is more than "used to use" the n word. She said it matter-of-factly, "Yes, of course." is up with that "of course" part? Like she's proud of that fact? It is expected in her circle of friends and family? Or what?

AND her idea of a southern wedding is a slave themed wedding. I've been to plenty of southern weddings, but none were slave themed. Most that I have been to either had family members doing the "catering" or Subway or some other local restaurant doing the catering. A slave themed wedding? That's just hideous.

I can only speak for myself. She has definitely lost a fan here. I urge everyone who is on the fence about it to read the actual deposition in its 149 page entirety like I did. It is a real eye opener.

I think what is really pushing this story is Paula Deen's personality and celebrity status. First, it seems that most of the people who are talking about this story think she has a nice personality and seems like a person who would never say something mean about someone, or to someone. Second, Deen is a celebrity, therefore; whenever she says something that is even slightly controversial it will make the news.

Fri Jun 21, 2013, 09:51 AM
Jun 2013

My dad's father came here from Germany. My dad grew up hearing and using that word. When my mom and dad were dating in the late 1950s, my dad used that word in front of my mom. Once. She told him if he ever used that word again, she would break up with him. They got married in 1959 and were married for 32 years when my dad died in 1992.

Growing up, my dad was very open-minded and tolerant. He always taught us, a person's looks, skin color, etc, doesn't matter, only their integrity and how they treat other people. My very first boyfriend was black. In 1975. In a rather segregated town in Illinois (Blacks lived on one side of town, whites the other). My dad was completely cool with my boyfriend. His only 'rule' was that we double-date or group date, for safety reasons.

When my mom told me that story about my dad's using that word, I was shocked. That was not the man I grew up with, at all. So I guess if my dad could change so dramatically, so can Paula Deen. Although... I'm not real confident that she will, or even wants to.

Maybe I shouldn't admit it, but I was raised by parents born in 1919 and 1922, and it was a word commonly used in our household. I would be shocked to hear someone say it today, but I remember when it was just a noun and not a racial slur.

Even having said that and understanding the times she was raised in (I'm close to her age), Paula Deen should have more sense and more respect for EVERYONE than to speak and behave like she did.
