Paula Deen dropped by another major brand

Source: USA Today

Arienne Thompson

Paula Deen is in free fall.

Just two days after Food Network dropped her from its roster, another major brand has let the Southern-fried, scandal-scarred cook go.

"Smithfield condemns the use of offensive and discriminatory language and behavior of any kind," the ham company, for which Deen was a spokeswoman, said in a statement Monday. "Therefore, we are terminating our partnership with Paula Deen. Smithfield is determined to be an ethical food industry leader and it is important that our values and those of our spokespeople are properly aligned."

The news is just the latest bullet point in one of the biggest celebrity scandals of the year. Since news broke last week that Deen admitted in a deposition that she had used a racial slur, the celeb chef has gone to work trying to repair her image. (The deposition was in conjunction with a lawsuit accusing Deen of fostering and maintaining a sexist, racist workplace at one of her Georgia restaurants.)

I can assure you there were plenty of their neighbors who wouldn't have let that happen. It's just gross. Savannah is slightly better, but they all have a very long way to go.

Not exactly the best spokesperson for a food company.

Something about her having diabetes came out earlier last year, and the first thing I thought was about how she was always talking about using so much butter when she cooked.
She was always talking about dipping whatever she was cooking in butter, just soak it with butter, butter this, butter that.
Butter, butter, butter.

because I could never stand her. But she has a $16 million empire, book deals (a zillion books on Amazon), cookware, DVD's,
QVC, Walmart, Sears, JC Penney, Target other endorsements.
Her sons bubba and booboo are probably frantic at losing their meal ticket, as the "momma's not a racist cuz I had Hank Aaron jammies" was the best defense they could come up with. Pathetic.

So I typed in "Cooking Magazines" the other day to get a list and see if one of them jogged my memory (it was Saveur I was thinking about). I was so surprised how many of them had her face on the cover, something like half of them! That woman sure has, or had, quite an empire.

As a TV personality she always totally creeped me out. That huge silver hair and grinning clown face. That's not to say I hated her since I have no idea what she's like in real life. But her media persona sure rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe it triggered my innate genetic fear of clowns.

All these big corporations firing her? What hubris. What hypocrisy. if we're gonna go after racists, go after the ones in congress who've thrown the country into gridlock because the Black man in the white house is acid in their guts. Go after the people who keep electing them, those folks who - regardless of age, gender - think just like Paula.

Paula is a fool. When I find out she's funding right wing groups, then I'll hate on her. Until then, I'm gonna focus on the real enemies of Black folks - like the supreme court that just today delivered a devastating blow to voting rights.

Don't be diverted by this Paula nonsense - red meat thrown by the right (Smithfield Hams indeed).

On the one hand I thought her attitude towards food helped people justify their "well let's just go ahead and clog every last artery" cooking and eating style. On the other, I do remember one time she had Jimmy Carter on and said what a fan she was of his. Also, she pissed off some Christians by letting it slip that she and her husband had slept together before marriage (*gasp*), so that won her some points in my favor.
