Texas prepares to execute 500th inmate
Source: KSN TV Channel 3
On Wednesday, barring a reprieve, Kimberly McCarthy will become the 500th convicted killer in Texas to receive a lethal injection.
I think our process works just fine, Perry said last year during his unsuccessful presidential campaign. You may not agree with them, but we believe in our form of justice.
We think it is clearly appropriate.
So do most Texans.
A 2012 poll from the Texas Tribune and the University of Texas showed only 21 percent opposed to capital punishment.

(10,497 posts)the Innocence Project! They also ignore the cost of each one of those murders vs. life in prison. Texas prisons are hell on earth so if they were really vengeful they would give'em life.

(3,731 posts)Makes you wonder how many innocent people have been executed. You know darn good and well there had to be some.
Ron White said it best, "while other states are slowing down executions, my state (TX) in putting in an express lane".

(3,241 posts)Killing to prove that killing is wrong is ridiculous. Forcing children to be born into that world of misery is even more ridiculous.

(2,674 posts)This woman preyed on helpless old ladies. She had a history of attacking and beating old women to rob them. This killing was very brutal. She cut the old lady's fingers off to get her rings and then stole her car. I guess my Texas blood is coming through because while I am liberal on most things, when it comes to a human who purposely preys on other humans, I think they deserve to die.

(11,841 posts)I would make one change to the law though. I think the death penalty should only be given when the jury finds them guilty with NO DOUBT. Not "reasonable doubt". There are plenty of cases that fit. And some that dont should NOT be tried as death cases.
Anyone see the nannycam video of the guy beating the woman in her home in front of her small child? If she had died, that would be a perfect example.

The death penalty in Texas is what deserves a lethal injection.

(11,841 posts)And the cost shouldnt be what it is either. If the simple change I suggest was put into place it would also stop the endless appeals and do away with the chance of putting an innocent to death. All of us are NOT the same. Some are human predators. They seem to do just fine behind bars and make the best of it. Studies show that violent crime does drop in the time right after an execution. The problem is we dont have them often enough. Theres certainly no shortage of people who deserve it.
Obviously there will always be disagreement here. I also support loooong sentences for any prosecutors who hide or fabricate evidence.

(11,841 posts)I think one example was in Illinois. Another, although sorry, example was the prosecutor in the Duke lacrosse rape scandal. He got ONE day in jail for lying. But I think he also lost his job.

(187 posts)On July 21, 1997, McCarthy reportedly called her neighbor, former El Centro College psychology professor Dorothy Booth, saying that she was on her way over to borrow some sugar. Prosecutors later alleged that McCarthy's true intent was to rob Booth. After McCarthy arrived at Booth's home, she stabbed Booth five times with a butcher knife, beat her with a candelabrum, and cut off her finger to steal her diamond wedding ring. McCarthy then stole Booth's purse and Mercedes-Benz, then pawned the diamond ring in order to buy crack cocaine.
The day after Booth's murder, McCarthy was charged with murder. Evidence showed that McCarthy used Booth's credit cards at a liquor store and was in possession of Booth's driver's license. Booth's DNA was also found on the murder weapon, which police recovered from McCarthy's home.
In 1998, Kimberly McCarthy was convicted by a Dallas County, Texas jury of murdering Dorothy Booth. During the sentencing hearing, evidence was presented that in addition to Booths murder, McCarthy had also murdered two other elderly women in Dallas County in December 1988.
Like in the killing of Dorothy Booth, prosecutors alleged that McCarthy killed these two victims, 81-year-old Maggie Harding and 85-year-old Jettie Lucas, in order to purchase cocaine. McCarthy was never charged with those murders.
