Hearing Wednesday on San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant closure

Source: San Diego Daily Transcript

The California Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee will hold a hearing on Wednesday to discuss the challenges created by the permanent closure of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

Those challenges include how to safely decommission the plant, how to replace 2,200 megawatts of greenhouse gas-free generation, and the future of plant employees.

The California Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee, chaired by Senator Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima), will hold a public hearing to discuss these issues with energy utilities, regulators and grid operators.

The hearing will start at 9:30 a.m. at the California State Capitol in room 4203. To watch the hearing, visit http://www.calchannel.com/live-webcast/

Attending the hearing will be Senator Alex Padilla, (chair) and members of the Senate Energy, Utilities & Communications Committee; San Diego Gas & Electric; Southern California Edison; Robert Weisenmiller, chair, California Energy Commission; Steve Berberich, CEO, California Independent System Operator; and Mike Florio, commissioner, California Public Utilities Commission.
