Corrected: New Jersey Assembly Passes Gay Marriage Bill; Veto Promised
New Jerseys Assembly voted 42 to 33 on Thursday to approve a gay marriage bill that could pave the way for New Jersey to join six other states where same-sex couples can today legally wed.
To become law, the bill would have to be signed by Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican who has promised to veto the measure.

CORRECTION: An earlier alert gave an incorrect vote tally. There were 42 in favor of the bill, not 41.

(4,932 posts)8. not enough votes for an over-ride
But in Jersey, the legislature has 2 years to over-ride, so they expect to be able to do do at some point. Christie is a calculating ass-a referendum would bring out all the "social conservatives" in November, but he won't have the votes.
It is a shame that people are being are held hostage by his ovrrsized ambition.
