NSA Sued By Unusual Coalition Of Gun Rights And Environmental Activists Over 'Dragnet Surveillance'

Source: Huffington Post

Nearly two dozen political and religious groups from across the ideological spectrum, including the CalGuns Foundation and Greenpeace, sued the National Security Agency in federal district court on Tuesday. The civil lawsuit challenges the spy agency's authority to harvest and store phone records.

The suit was filed in San Francisco federal district court and was brought by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights advocacy group and law firm. It asserts that the NSA's "dragnet surveillance" -- which extends to millions of Americans -- is illegal and unconstitutional.

Other organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, have also recently filed suit against the NSA in response to leaked information on its surveillance programs. This most recent case is notable in that it represents a broad coalition of groups that often don't have much use for each other.

Plaintiffs include GreenPeace, Human Rights Watch and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. CalGuns, which lobbies against more restrictive gun laws, and one California gun manufacturer, Franklin Armory, have also joined the case, as have religious groups including the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

"The country is not as polarized as our politics would suggest." -Barack Obama

Oh look, people from different ideological ends of the spectrum, coming together to fight what everyone can agree is wrong.

Now that's bipartisanship that doesn't require ironic quotes around it.

Oh, you know, a few more religious groups, a union or two.
Maybe even be one of them red states that are always complaining about 'gubbernment' interference.
Might actually start a trend.
Might even accomplish something.

During Bush they wanted to set up check points at state lines.

Some wanted those just to keep the "undesirables" out.

Hunting usually involves both, so avid hunters sometimes care about both very deeply.

where were all these outraged types, when cameras were being installed ALL OVER cities in America?

XXX years ago in our area, waaaaaay up on top of poles at intersections overnight, cameras appeared.

Talk about your "Dragnet Surveillance"! Where was/is the howling about that stuff.

of everyone's phone calls.

That's just fucking stupid, but when one is defending the indefensible, any argument sounds good, right?

I was outraged when Bush did it, I was outraged when Obama broke his promise to filibuster immunity, and I'm outraged now.

My liberal/progressive principles have remained consistent. How 'bout you?
