Helen Thomas, pioneering White House journalist, dies at 92
Source: msnbc
Famed White House journalist Helen Thomas has died at the age of 92.
The Gridiron Club and Foundation, a journalistic organization in Washington, D.C., confirmed Thomas' passing to NBC News on Saturday.
Thomas died on Saturday morning at her Washington apartment after a long illness, the club said in a statement. A former president of the Gridiron Club, Thomas broke a long line of all-male leadership when she was chosen for the position in 1993.
The journalist who scored a front-row seat at White House press briefings after years of reporting for wire services had been in and out of the hospital recently, a friend, Muriel Dobbin, told the Associated Press. The daughter of Lebanese immigrants, Thomas had grown up in Detroit before moving to Washington, D.C., where she broke several barriers for female correspondents.

I don't understand why wiki or twitter can be a source. They broke the story first.

I have posted my own thread about her--one last time. I'll miss her as a friend and as a journalist.

I'm pretty sure she must have lived a tough life these last few decades. I say that because she could see. She had the powers of observation. That's a tough thing. We here all know that.

Yeah. If that's not an anti-Semite then she was just deluded.

(58,724 posts)In my opinion, those remarks are the ones that are really worthy of condemnation (as opposed to the video clip of that guy ambushing her with questions).
She talked about a certain group control of Congress, the White House, and Wall Street in that interview. And curiously asks if the person interviewing her is Jewish.
In any case, I do admire her accomplishments over the years and am sad to hear of her passing.

She was a national treasure and while I didn't agree with some of her views, she was never afraid to ask tough questions of presidents, especially Bush, when nobody else dared to do so. They relegated her to the back row and he wouldn't call on her for two years after one particularly challenging question about the war.

Rest I peace, Helen, you deserve it for a life well lived.

(14,093 posts)That's why they moved her to the back of the room, and that's why they tried to ruin her by distorting her comments in that ambush video some hack made.
I met Helen dozens of times and she was one of the most approachable, down-to-earth, honest and decent people in media.
The world is poorer without her around.
