Mayor Bob Filner, who has been dogged by calls for his resignation over sexual harassment allegations, called his treatment of women inexcusable Friday and said he would undergo two weeks of intensive behavioral therapy but not relinquish power.
I must become a better person, Filner said in a statement he read before a throng of reporters. And my hope is that by becoming a better person I put myself in a position to someday be forgiven. However, before I can even think of asking for forgiveness, I need to demonstrate that my behavior has changed. And that will only happen over time and only if such incidents never, ever happen again.
Filner, the first Democratic mayor in 20 years, has been under siege for two weeks but the scandal intensified during the past five days as seven women stepped forward with accusations that he made unwanted sexual advances, including kisses, groping and derogatory comments.
Filners full statement lasted less than three minutes but was awkwardly interrupted by a microphone malfunction and he chose to start over a few minutes later when the problem was fixed. He didnt take any questions.

Looks like City Council president Todd Gloria will be the acting mayor in the meantime.

(6,719 posts)Two weeks tells me he does not realize what it will take to change.

(3,220 posts)I love the "treatment" route that anyone famous does for being an asshole. His PR team must have told him to do this, and the "treatment" will be as real as Santa Claus.

(11,521 posts)His 2 week "treatment" is an insult to anyone involved in legitimate counseling efforts. Obviously nothing more than a ploy to save his ass.

(32,047 posts)The county sheriff has set up a hotline specifically to take reports against the mayor. Two women I think already have filed criminal complaints.

(15,480 posts)He's been pushed into a corner the last few days, between the 4 prestigious new women accusers, and the DNC pushing him to resign. This gesture is sort of one of those insulting faux apologies: "I'm sorry if someone has taken offense. . . ."
If there's anything worse than a narcissistic, egomaniacal, bullying, sexual harassing male, it's an elderly one of the same, in a wheelchair, chasing women around at an assisted living facility. I ran into one of those, in his early 80's, while visiting someone a few months ago. He zeroed in on me and tried to hit me up for a date. Really, really pushy! Counting on my good manners not to tell him to fuck off. Some of the other old guys shouted at him to leave me alone, and I noticed the women avoided him like the plague. I was there again a week later and saw he had cornered some poor woman who had gone to sit on the outdoor porch to get some fresh air. I mean, if this guy weren't confined to a wheelchair, he would be a real physical danger to the women there!
My life experience has taught me that assholes and bitches do not mellow with age - they get worse!

(6,785 posts)possibly make him stop sexually harassing people is having someone kick him square in the nuts every five minutes for the entire two weeks. If that's what he's proposing, I support him fully. If it's anything less, he can go jump in a lake.
Edited to add: And if that doesn't work, there's always the two month treatment which is just like the two week treatment, just longer and this time around the employees wear clodhoppers.

(27,464 posts)getting away repeatedly with what is obviously unethical behavior, and being permitted to even consider staying in office. Two weeks of therapy isn't going to do a thing to change Filner's disposition, we all know that, and the fact that he proposes it as a solution tells me as much about him as does his history of creepy, unwanted sexual advances. By gawd, we as a nation have set the bar shamefully low for all our elected representatives.

He can resign...so far nope
He can...be convicted and given prison time. That will take a year, at the least, assuming there is a conviction. The Sherriffs is building a case right now. Them taking time and not messing it up, high profile and all I get it.
But the calls for resignation are widespread.

He is delusional and its almost sad.

The mike failed, that's take two. When it failed it went from surprised to pissed...then left.
He refused to answer any questions from local, regional, national or international crews...that I get...anything he says is actionable.
Oh and here is a piece if detail none will tell you. Room was relatively small, the conference room, half of it was taken by table. There were fifty or so reporters inside and thirty to forty outside. I was literally among the last, if not outright the last one, to be let in.

(2,749 posts)This is such bullshit. Some of the stuff he's done, in my mind, qualifies as criminal and he should be charged with several counts of what sounds like sexual battery.

(154,021 posts)Specifically for this.
But there are a few things they have to contend with so them taking time I get it. (As well as being webby, webby quiet)
1.- how many women have approached them? They said more than a few, they can't reveal names, or even an exact number, due to Gracie's law. I am betting more are approaching by the way.
2.- High profile case...they need to make sure there are no mistakes in building the case.
3.- Very real statue of limitations for both civil and criminal complaints. The only charge with no limit would be aggravated rape. (With a weapon)

(154,021 posts)Eckerd is respected county wide, not just city of San Doego. Since Filner is not stepping down, Eckerd is the man, not Gloria.

(2,818 posts)Sorry dude, if you are, as you are, a demonstrated slime-bag at your age there is no way for you to change.
Please just quit - or, at least, switch parties.
