Pope Francis Defends Amazon And Environment In Brazil

Source: Huffington Post

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Pope Francis took on the defense of the Amazon and the environment near the end of his weeklong trip to Brazil, as he donned a colorful Indian headdress Saturday and urged that the rainforest be treated as a garden.

The pontiff met with a few thousand of Brazil's political, business and cultural elite in Rio de Janeiro's Municipal Theater, where he also shook hands with Indians who said they were from a tribe that has been battling ranchers and farmers trying to invade their land in northeastern Bahia state.

In a separate speech to bishops, the pope called for "respect and protection of the entire creation which God has entrusted to man, not so that it be indiscriminately exploited but rather made into a garden."

He also urged attention to a 2007 document by Latin American and Caribbean bishops that he was in charge of drafting, which underscored dangers facing the Amazon environment and the native people living there.

A pope speaking of environmental responsibility is good...particularly when it comes to the world's rain forests. I've felt for a long time that the equatorial forests are the crucible of life on this planet and need to be treated as such at all costs.

The Catholic Church may now be the most progressive major institution on Earth when it comes to the poor and the environment, which is awfully bizarre.

Remember, my friend, it's easy to delude ones self about these sort of things. Only for the truth to be realized 5 short months later.

Just don't get your hopes up.

This is as far as I'm concerned a messaging thing since Catholicism has been on the decline in Brazil.

Despite the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue that towers over this city, there is deep anxiety among some Catholics about the future of their faith, given rising secularization and indifference to religion here. Only 65 percent of Brazilians now say they are Catholic, down from more than 90 percent in 1970, according to the 2010 census. The decline has been so steep and continuous, especially in Rio de Janeiro, that one of Brazil’s top Catholic leaders, Cardinal Cláudio Hummes, has remarked, “We wonder with anxiety: how long will Brazil remain a Catholic country?”

There's a reason a Latin American pope was selected.

It's all well and good to say to respect the environment but Brazil's grass fed beef, which EU is addicted to, is destroying the Amazon and the government is having a hard time dealing with it and the Church's efforts have had little impact.

"Greenpeace accuses McDonald's of destroying the Amazon rainforest
Rhett A. Butler, mongabay.com
April 7, 2006

After a year-long investigation, the environmental group Greenpeace has accused McDonald's and other western firms of contributing to deforestation in the Amazon.

Greenpeace's report, published today, alleges that much of the soy-based animal feed used by fast-food chains to fatten chickens is derived from soybeans grown in the Amazon Basin of Brazil."

I'm glad he spoke about the environment and the endangered Amazon region.

I think that Francis will be a good Pope. The news is just saying that Francis' mass in Copacabana was the second largest ever. The first was in the Philippines where 5 million people gathered to hear John Paul II give mass.

I'm glad that your elopement worked out.

seeking a way to exist on the earth and feed their families. If you want to solve Brazil's issues with the National culture impeding upon the Native world, throwing a broad brush at corporations won't suffice. A myriad of social problems must be solved and that requires a public domain focus and an effective legal structure to protect Indigenous rights.

His views are admirable, but I wasn't just speaking locally.

I mean views such as he is promoting will meet serious resistance
if they are expanded worldwide because such views do not support
the corporate agenda.

I think he is a good man, a breath of fresh air so far, seems to
realize on many levels that the status quo is not going so well
as to be acceptable. It's almost like the Papacy has advanced
a few hundred years. One giant leap for the Pope ....
