"C is for cookie ... and condescension, McCrory's critics say" (NC)

Source: Raleigh News & Observer

"You know all of those people who’ve been accusing Gov. Pat McCrory of being insensitive and unconcerned with anything other than slashing corporate taxes, Medicaid and unemployment insurance? They were forced to eat their words Tuesday when the governor magnanimously delivered unto a group of protesters a plateful of chocolate chip cookies.

-----
You see, protesters who felt that Gov. McCrory had reneged on a Candidate McCrory promise to veto any laws restricting abortion access were gathered outside the Executive Mansion holding signs, when McCrory emerged with what looked to be a baker’s dozen of the sweets.

------
If taking cookies to protesters isn’t a populist, man-of-the-people move, I’ll eat a dead possum fried in turpentine – which is more than the protesters did with the cookies. They took them back to the mansion gate with a note that read “Gov. McCrory, will take women’s health over cookies.”

You don’t reckon that the governor, looking out the window and seeing that some of the women were dressed in early 1960s-era styles, concluded that polemic political activists had reverted to compliant, cookie-baking June Cleavers, do you?"...

He said, "God bless you. God bless you. God bless you." when he handed her the cookies. What a jerk.

And in the South, we know that "Bless You" may also mean the opposite of Bless You --depending on the situation. I'm sure McCrony had the latter meaning and inflection in mind.

during the Senate debate way back when? It didn't sit well with New Yorkers. Pat's little stunt won't sit well with sane North Carolinians, and should hurt his already dropping numbers. He should not have left her (or a him) standing in the middle of a busy street without escorting her back. Or asking one of his guards to escort her back. The cookies were asshole-ish, but that was dangerous.

--which was pretty good in NC, and also both Melissa Harris-Perry and Lawrence O'Donnell covered it on MSNBC tonight. O'Donnell had a NARAL spokesperson and a journalist from the Guardian talking about the issues in the larger context, but he incorporated the North Carolina story as the latest battle in the war on women.

THANK YOU NC protestors. You did goooooood!

as in, It's a great photo.

I'm sure she wants to toss those cookies on the ground, but that would be 'acting up' and she's not going to give them the satisfaction. The Koch puppet knows he's deliberately provoking them. But he gives himself away--obviously he's too chicken to actually talk to those people.

Great self-control, protestors. Put the cookies at the gates of the Oligarchy, take pix, get the story out.

Cookies--a new theme for NC...."they take everything worth anything and give us some cookies"...the height of humiliation.

God Bless You
Bless You
Bless Your Heart
Bless Your cotton pickin' (or other adjective) heart

Etc

---the meaning all depends on the tone and the situation. The honey tones and the knife in the back.

Since "God Bless You" is totally inappropriate in this context, it basically meant, "you pathetic little nothings, now shut up and fuck off."

Most people would get the "cookies" condescension and sexism even if they didn't get the malice behind the faux blessings. McCrory would never have the guts to do this to a man.

Excellent piece in the Observer:

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/08/01/4207342/mccrorys-cookies-one-pat-on-head.html

Whatever the governor’s intentions, someone – maybe a female on his staff – should have dissuaded him from the cookie exchange. While he was having an open-minded conversation with those protesters about their differences on these matters, refreshments would have been appropriate. But as a substitute for a discussion, the offer came off as demeaning, dismissive and disdainful.

It was also patronizing. It’s hard to believe the governor would have done the same thing for a group of men protesting. So that chant from the women: “Hey Pat, that was rude. You wouldn’t give cookies to a dude” had resonance.

Adding more insult, later that night a McCrory staff member delivered slices of cake to a young girl and her mother who were protesting outside the mansion with Occupy Raleigh members. “I was like, ‘Thank you very much, but it would be nice if we could have some rights with that,’?” 12-year-old Madison Kimrey told reporters. McCrory didn’t know about the cake incident, his staff said. But Madison’s reaction was spot on, nonetheless: “I was like, ‘Why? You do realize this is just giving us more ammo against (the governor).’ I would rather sit down with (him) while we’re eating cookies.”

Duh. A 12-year-old gets the point but McCrory and his staff don’t?

The sad thing about these incidents is that they are part of a pattern of condescension and dismissal by this legislature and this governor. With lawmakers calling constituents who disagree with them “morons” and “crazies,” and shutting them down with declarations of “I am the senator, you are the citizen. You need to be quiet,” the denigration has been stark.

More at link--really good article!

Hope people continue to keep up this visible pressure. Some will ask, "what good does protest do?"

Answer: It shows in a literal way, how strong the opposition to their policies is. If the NC legislators are going to keep up this assault on the people, they need to SEE the people they are hurting. They need to face them. So far, all they are doing is hiding from those who object to their backward
and greedy agenda.
