Obama seeks Syria support from former foe McCain

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is inviting former foe Sen. John McCain to the White House, hoping one of Congress' most intractable foreign policy hawks will help sell the idea of a U.S. military intervention in Syria to a nation deeply scarred by more than a decade of war.

Having announced over the weekend that he'll seek congressional approval for military strikes against the Assad regime, the Obama administration is now trying to rally support among Americans and their congressman and senators.

Monday's meeting with McCain is meant to address concerns of those who feel Obama isn't doing enough to punish Syrian President Bashar Assad's government for an attack in the Damascus suburbs last month that the U.S. says included sarin gas and killed at least 1,429 civilians, more than 400 of whom were children. On the other side of the spectrum, some Republican and Democratic lawmakers don't want to see military action at all.

Obama's turnabout on Syria sets the stage for the biggest foreign policy vote in Congress since the Iraq war.

Obama wants to use McCain(warmonger) to sell we the people a bullshit idea for military intervention? The same McCain who in a joint statement with his girlfriend Lindsey wants the complete removal of Assad from power, in other words regime change!

WTF is this man thinking!

Mon Sep 2, 2013, 09:26 AM
Sep 2013

To get the public option, he needed to get 100% of the Democrats in the Senate which he did not have. (He and others were not comfortable with adding it to the reconciliation bill. ) Not to mention, once the exchanges are up, there is nothing to stop a state from adding a public option. States, like Vermont, will. If it then lowers Vermont's cost and raises the quality or ease of getting care, don't you think that other states will follow suit?

Obama DID meet with the people who did not want the public option - like Lieberman, but they would not change.

Here, you have McCain, who has been pushing for US involvement for two years. He is saying he won't vote for a resolution unless it goes further - but even yesterday he suggested it would send the wrong signal for it to be defeated. Now, Obama will not move in his direction, but by honoring him with this early meeting and likely praise, he will get his support and likely the support of people McCain influences.

Fight for is another. Sure the dynamics are different but the point is about fighting for what matters to you, drawing that line in the sand.... Clearly BHO didn't have the will to fight for a public option in the same way he is fighting to aid and abet Israel by bombing Syria.

This bullshit is definitely not about saving children's lives

It was revealed this morning that McCain, during his personal mission to Syria to meet with rebels, appeared in photos with Mohammed Nour and Abu Ibrahim, two members of the Sunni "Northern Storm" brigade, which kidnapped 11 Lebanese Shia pilgrims, who were on their way back to Lebanon, from Iran. The group is still holding nine of the hostages.

I sense he has a bigger picture painted than what we have been discussing. I really don't believe he wants to attack Syria. I can't put my finger on it ...apparently no one has yet...I just know we have experienced his covert strategies before followed by calling him a genius.

Is he baiting McCain?

"You want it, you can sell it" is what he is saying, among other things, and I think it is clear he doesn't want it and won't take the rap for it. Not unlike what he said to his pro-war advisers, I suppose. And it's very Obama-like to refuse to just give orders. Maybe he sees it as a "teachable moment" of some sort.

But he risks war.

Now he is being asked to sell what he has been selling this past week. I watched the jerk
on CNN, he was practically salivating at the idea of attacking Syria.

I say he is likely pissed b/c the last thing he ever figured was that Obama would
ask him to pitch for him.

It's funny to me in that context. I can't wait to hear McCain's response...fucking hypocrite

GOP is coming after the domestic programs, just as I'd expected they would.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/02/politics/us-syria-defense/

"We cannot keep asking the military to perform mission after mission with a sequestration and military cuts hanging over their heads," GOP Rep. Buck McKeon of California, the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, told CNN on Monday. "We have to take care of our own people first."

Congress wants more details on Syria 'Prestige of U.S. is on the line' How divided is Congress on Syria?
While McKeon made clear that his concern was about future preparedness rather than current capability, he argued a bedrock conservative stance against having the military be a major contributor to cost-cutting in Washington.

"I have no concerns of their capability. They're the strongest, best equipped, best trained military," he said. "What I'm looking at is what they've been hit with the last couple years. Where will they be the next time they're asked?"
Noting that "the world has not gotten safer," McKeon complained that "we're cutting back $1 trillion out of our military, asking them to do more with less."

"That has to stop," he said, calling for President Barack Obama to "fix" the across-the-board spending cuts on the military and other discretionary government spending that doesn't include entitlement programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.
