George Zimmerman's Wife Files for Divorce

Source: ABC News

George Zimmerman's wife Shellie has filed for divorce less than two months after he was acquitted of murder in the death of teenager Trayvon Martin.

She filed the paper work just days after she said in an interviewed aired exclusively on ABC News that the ordeal of the trial had put a strain on their marriage.

The petition says the couple, married in 2007, "separated on Aug. 13, 2013 and are not presently cohabiting as husband and wife. The marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken." They have no children.

Shellie Zimmerman has asked for "equitable distribution" of their assets as well as their debts. She also seeks sole custody of their two dogs, a Rottweiler named Oso and a smaller dog named Leroy.

She filed for divorce today in Seminole County, Fla.

Does spousal immunity still apply? Or can she now testify against him? If I was him, I'd make sure she was very happy with the settlement. Seeing how he's a big bully and not too bright, I don't think that will happen. He'll make her mad at him and she'll tell all she knows if a divorce ends the immunity.

Does anyone know how the immunity works, does it have to be applied during questioning like the fifth amendment or can a spouse make a blanket refusal to testify based on immunity?

He was tried and found not guilty in the Treyvon Martin case. Double jeopardy dictates here doesn't it. Double jeopardy is a procedural defense that forbids a defendant from being tried again on the same (or similar) charges following a legitimate acquittal or conviction.

I'm not sure if there are any exceptions to this. What if she provides information that could really put no doubt that he killed Treyvon Martin basically in cold blood and there was no basis for using the 'stand your ground' defense?

And wasn't even there by her side when she appeared in court for perjury. A perjury I am sure George Zimmerman pressured her into committing. I did make a mental note that she was not with him either time he got ticketed for speeding. He is a loose cannon that will get in big trouble again. Next time he may not face such a pathetic prosecution team.

I knew that she left him back then. But she was in the courtroom every day of that farce of a trial. And cried with relief when he was acquitted. But he never went to her after, in the courtroom. I watched for that. He is a self-centered, pathetic creep.

Why didn't that come out in the trial? It seems awfully relevent to me. Especially in the light of the phone call that the neighbor made to her on Z's behalf to inform her of the killing. Remember how the neighbor testified that while Z was handcuffed, he asked the neighbor to call his wife to tell her "I shot somebody" but when the neighbor began explaining to her more about the circumstances, that Z was being arrested but that he was ok, Z got pissed and told him to "Just tell her I shot someone."

When I heard that testimony I recall thinking it was odd. Like she would know what the message meant or something. What if when she left part of the fight had to do with his wannabe cop issues, and she taunted him in some way such that he felt he had something to prove by shooting someone? Or what if part of why he did it was to get her sympathy so she'd come back? Surely his state of mind was influenced by his wife having left him the day before, yet it did not come up in the trial.

that the night before he killed Martin, they had a huge fight and she went to her father's house for the night. Not sure if that is true. My theory: I'm sure he was upset about her filing for a divorce back then. I just wonder why the lawyers advised her to stay until after the trial was over?

It would have been damaging news for potential jurors. And possibly damaging if she was never there for support during his trial.

With an acquittal, there's $$ to be made from interviews and such. No Son of Sam laws. That could have been a possible point of persuasion.

and it's "equitable distribution" of their assets. What that means is they will have to list all assets, including income from those GZ support people, and any and all accounts. So if GZ is hiding away some money, she probably knows where it is, and her lawyer will find it. GZ will then have to disclose the source of the money in the account. And, IIRC, this will be public record. But she should be careful that GZ does not dump half of the cost of his defense on her...
