E-cigarette use among middle and high school students skyrockets, CDC data show

Source: Washington Post

The use of electronic cigarettes among middle and high school students has been rising rapidly, a trend that public health officials worry could undermine decades of efforts to reduce youth smoking and put a growing number of teenagers on a path toward conventional cigarettes.

According to data released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of middle and high school students in the United States who have used e-cigarettes more than doubled from 2011 to 2012.

“The increased use of e-cigarettes by teens is deeply troubling,” CDC Director Tom Frieden said in announcing findings from the National Youth Tobacco Survey. “Nicotine is a highly addictive drug. Many teens who start with e-cigarettes may be condemned to struggling with a lifelong addiction to nicotine and conventional cigarettes.”

E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that look like cigarettes but do not burn tobacco. Rather, they deliver nicotine, flavor and other chemicals in the form of a vapor. A starter kit, which typically includes two e-cigarettes, extra batteries and various nicotine cartridges, can cost $20 to $200. Because of the limited research into e-cigarette use, their risks and benefits remain uncertain and subject to widespread debate.

I'm not a child. I use one and I know many, many adult ex-smokers who switched to them like I did.

My device is made in the USA.

The liquid I order was made in the USA.

I bought the silver bullet model from there, its assembled right nearby in Newark Ohio.

I buy my liquids from a site called halocigs.com and all its juices are made in the USA.

And even the Chinese made stuff, only trace amounts of carcinogens were found in studies that were done, we are talking like mere fractions of the amount that it would take of said substances to be even remotely harmful for human consumption.

Aside from the nicotine and flavoring, the primary ingredient used in ecig liquid is the same stuff that's used in fog machines, some asthma inhalers and other medical devices. Its been thoroughly vetted as safe for human inhalation long before ecigs made use of it. An ecig is just a hand held fog machine with nicotine and flavoring added to the vapor.

I must look young for my age. I have smoked the real thing since I was 16, a pack a day. In the first week with my e cig I had a pack. The last two weeks I have had none. My breathing is getting much better. But, I guess it is just a toy for children.

...and I am somewhat torn and uncertain on the issue. As an ex-smoker I have the customary hatred of the smell and taste of tobacco, and of tobacco companies. But e-cigs are a different thing really.

It is still a nicotine addiction, but the studies are pretty inconclusive about how unhealthy that really is. Definitely more research is needed, and sooner rather than later. I do have doubts about e-cigs being a "gateway" to smoking. I know people who smoke e-cigs and have no interest in smoking cigarettes - citing the smell, the staining of teeth and fingers, the bad breath, the cost, and the lack of variety. Why would someone switch from something cheap and clean to something expensive and foul?

In any case, I'm against teens being addicted to anything; life is hard enough at that age. But any final opinion would hinge on what the research says, and it isn't conclusive. E-cigs have a pretty bad case of guilt-by-association, but it remains to be seen how deserved it is.

I used it to quit and only use no-nic juice now, and I know a couple people at work who are exclusive vapers with 24mg juice, but at the same time I know quite a few that always seem to have a pack of smokes handy just in case.
I am curious about their availability to kids though, the pre-packaged ones at drug stores require ID and the vape shops require ID just to come in around where I live. I have no problems with that.

I'm sick of being denied things because of children. Not all of us have them, but our TV is edited so little Johnny who is up at 10:00 doesn't hear the word fuck on TV, but his parents use the word ALL the time. Get rid of the big bad e-cigarette, but allow guns in homes with children. This is a fad. It's YOUR kid, YOU better have more control over what they do. I'm tired of losing things over the protection of strange children. THEY are NOT my responsibility. It's YOURS!

I'm surprised there isn't a national minimum age requirement (I guess some states regulate the purchase by minors).

The product is also being marketed to kids, so that's another problem.

Something about how minors can just go into a store and buy them.

But some of us natives are pretty restless already. Make it like booze. Those who get caught buying under age or for someone under age, then fine them and lock THEM up. Don't take away what some people like. If it's bad for us, then WE take the risk.

There are many benefits to vaping rather than smoking, so there is that, that they are using their noggin' and not going the tobacco route. Generally, kids are drawn to flavored cigarettes and I'm sure it is the multitude of flavors that are drawing them. Who says they are automatically going for the nicotine juice? There are 0% juices out there that taste so much better than the nicotine ones. In the long run, I'd rather them vaping than smoking.

I'm torn because in kids using them, they will become banned "for the children"? It only takes one or two to FUBAR for the rest of us.

They are the future of legal portable marijuana consumption and they really help quit regular smoking. They should not be banned Simply regulated like cigs and MJ and alcohol. No teen and kids and vaping indoors and within 20 feet of buildings like in many states.

And every single one of them started on cigarettes and use e-cigs to wean themselves off. I realize that's purely anecdotal, but in my experience not a sngle kid I know has started with e-cigs (nor have many managed to quit entirely).

It's not great, but it's better than lung cancer.
