Hitler's bodyguard dies, aged 96
Source: MSN UK News
The man who was one of Adolf Hitler's principle bodyguards for most of the second world war, and who witnessed the Nazi leader's final hours in his Berlin bunker, has died at the age of 96.
...
Misch never spoke critically about his years working for Hitler, whom he affectionately called "boss".
In a 2005 interview he described Hitler as "a very normal man. "He was no brute. He was no monster. He was no superman."
...
He recalled that on 22 April, two days before two Soviet armies completed their encirclement Berlin, Hitler said: "That's it. The war is lost. Everybody can go." "Everyone except those who still had jobs to do like us - we had to stay," Misch said. "The lights, water, telephone... those had to be kept going but everybody else was allowed to go and almost all were gone immediately."

(49,991 posts)He was only allowed to return to Berlin in 1954, where he was reunited with his wife Gerda, whom he married in 1942 and who died in 1997.
Misch made a new life as a shopkeeper.
When interviewed and photographed in 2005, Misch - then aged 87 - still bore the traces of an SS man, boasting a rigid posture, broad shoulders and neatly combed white hair.
But he always shied away from questions of guilt or responsibility for the Holocaust, saying he knew nothing of the murder of six million Jews and that Hitler never brought up the so-called "Final Solution" in his presence.

(26,330 posts)I found it fascinating how many attempts were made on his life.
The amount of security and technology was fascinating. He had one of the first ejection seats which was basically a recliner, a trap door and a parachute.
He was cagey. And lucky - my dad would say he had a horseshoe up his ass.
For the first time thanks to previously unseen SS records and images, this series provides a unique insight into the men that guarded Hitler and explores one of the most enduring and unanswered questions surviving from World War II why, in 25 years, did no-one manage to kill Adolf Hitler?
Causing the deaths of 50 million people, Adolph Hitler became one of the 20th centurys most iconic hate figures. Despised by those he persecuted, and even by some of his own commanders, Hitlers life was constantly in danger as he spread his tyranny throughout Europe. As he developed from shock politician to supreme leader of Nazi Germany, he collected a long list of enemies along the way.
Protecting Hitler was one of the worlds toughest jobs. During his time in power he survived over 40 attempts on his life thanks to his fearless bodyguards.
These included perhaps his closest and most trusted bodyguard Bruno Gesche, a tough street fighter. In return, Hitler repaid Gesche by promoting him to his personal bodyguard crew and this rock-solid inner circle repelled assassination attempt after assassination attempt.

(26,330 posts).... the entire security apparatus of anything from run of the mill troops to closely held fanatics. It also refers to the equipment like specially equipped trains and airplanes.
I don't recall any instance where he was saved by anything but his own luck or cagey refusal to keep a schedule or let ANYONE know his exact travel schedule/plans. But there may have been times in "the early days" when his thug followers saved his bacon.
I started re watching it again last night. It appears the entire series is on YouTube. Here is the first in the series.
