Kerry urges EU to postpone funding ban in Israeli-occupied territories

Source: Swiss Info

VILNIUS (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry urged the European Union on Saturday to put off a planned ban on EU financial assistance to Israeli organizations in the occupied Palestinian territories, a U.S. official said.

Kerry made the request at a meeting with EU foreign ministers at which he also called on them to support Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations, which resumed on July 29 after a nearly three-year hiatus.

The EU imposed restrictions in July citing its frustration over the continued expansion of Jewish settlements in territory captured by Israeli forces in the 1967 Middle East War.

A senior U.S. State Department official told reporters that Kerry called on the Europeans to consider postponing the implementation of EU guidelines on aid.

In fact because of how far such support goes from just about every president for the past few decades I will lay you odds that this advice to support Israel no matter what the cost comes more from the varies military advisors than anyone else.

Note that he says - postpone. It may be that the ban is more effective held over the heads of Israelis than actually implemented while talks are ongoing.

I guess you then have a problem that the world is doing nothing in reaction to Assad gassing his own people -- which is worse than what Israel has done.

Note - he said postpone, not don't do. It makes sense to postpone it while there are ongoing talks - which there are. Maybe even as a lever to stop adding to the settlements? It is a powerful disincentive.

given that some EU countries , with such appropriate sanctions already in place , stand alone on the issue devoid of what the EU does.

of action if Israel does not work to a 2 state solution.

Here is a link to J Street's letter to its mail list:

http://jstreet.org/blog/post/an-open-letter-to-the-american-jewish-community_1

Here is a summary of what JStreet said - loosely based on Kerry's speech would happen if Israel does not work to a 2 state solution:

"But that is a recipe for yet another failure -- and we cannot afford for Secretary Kerry to fail. The consequences are too huge and too negative:

The Palestinians will seek and gain membership in the International Criminal Court, leaving Israelis at risk of being accused of war crimes for activities over the Green Line.
A Third Intifada could break out, the Palestinian economy could implode and the Palestinian Authority could collapse, leaving a power vacuum that will greatly threaten Israel’s security.
Campaigns to boycott, delegitimize and sanction Israel, which we all oppose, will gain steam. Israel will face growing international isolation. Israeli artists, academics and athletes will find themselves increasingly unwelcome abroad.
Worst of all, as Kerry said, Israelis will face a future of “perpetual conflict.”

They have the arrogant (and imo misguided) opinion that they are "entitled" to that land.

Of course, it's written in Babylonian cuneiform, so I'm doubtful if it would stand up in court.

The EU and Israel committed themselves to establishing a partnership and that partnership makes for a more stable Lebanon.

I hope Israel can finish their darn border swaps, tear the baby Jerusalem city in half like it already isa divided city.

Cut free the Palestinians without Syria? rushing in and re-occupying them when their economy blasts to zero.
