Bob Newhart finally gets his Emmy Award

Source: AP

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bob Newhart, among TV's most enduring stars with shows stretching back more than five decades, wept as he finally captured his first Emmy Award.

Newhart, 84, was honored at Sunday's creative arts Emmy ceremony for his guest role last season on "The Big Bang Theory" as Professor Proton, a down-on-his-luck former host of a children's science show.

"This is my seventh shot at this. ... I just love this very much," he said, gazing tearfully at the trophy in his hand as the audience gave him a standing ovation.

Newhart's long TV history includes the 1970s "The Bob Newhart Show," ''Newhart" in the 1980s and "Bob" in the '90s and six previous nominations. His 1961 variety series "The Bob Newhart Show" earned a writing bid.

On Stage at the Kennedy Center: The Mark Twain Prize 2002 honored one the country’s most beloved comedians, Bob Newhart, who received the 2002 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

He has at least one Grammy, too. Nevertheless, I am surprised to hear this is his first Emmy Award.

You can tell how permanent a cultural reference is by its use elsewhere. On an episode of The Boondocks, they pay homage to "my brother Darryl, and my other brother Darryl" this way:

UNCLE RUCKUS: There was my brother Darryl (accent on first syllable)

(beat)

and my other brother Darrell (accent on second syllable.)

Another such easy-to-overlook reference I remember is from an episode of Futurama where the crew goes to Evil Santa's workshop at the north Pole. Santa works his elves relentlessly and, even though they are working feverishly on his assembly line making toys, it isn't fast enough for him. So he goes to the wall where the speed dial is and turns it up to the maximum. The dial has three settings:

FAST - FASTER - LUCY

This, of course, is a reference to the famous chocolate factory scene in I Love Lucy.

Yay for Bob! Love him! The Bob Newhart Show was brilliant, including the great supporting cast. I especially enjoyed Jack Riley as the ever annoying patient Mr. Carlin and Bob Daily at the nitwit pilot neighbor. I took photos of the building where Bob lived when I was in Chicago.

I thought living in a apartment like Bob Newhart's was the height of "Hot damn I have made it"-ness.

Every once in a while I float the idea to my wife of selling the house and getting a condo downtown but we live in Orlando so it would never be as cool as Bob's building in Chicago. And she ain't into it.

If she ever kicks me out though....

for, of all things, heavy metal. It was one of those moments when I think the awarders thought "holy shit, Jethro Tull has never won a grammy? They ought to have done by now. We will fix that.", ignoring the fact that Metallica's And Justice for All was one of the best metal albums of all time and Crest of a Knave could have been nominated in the folk category.

Newhart should have won outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for Newhart or the Bob Newhart Show. An emmy for a guest spot does not quite make up for it. Michael J. Fox beat him twice? Seriously?
