Romney camp's game plan: Make Ford Field look crowded

Romney camp's game plan: Make Ford Field look crowded
February 24, 2012
By John Gallagher
Detroit Free Press Business Writer

It won't be hard to fit 1,200 members of the Detroit Economic Club into 65,000-seat Ford Field for today's speech by GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

What will be hard is making it look like Romney isn't speaking to a nearly empty stadium.

The Romney campaign and the Economic Club think they've solved the problem. The guests will be seated at one end of the playing surface, roughly between the end zone and the 30-yard line, while Romney will speak from a stage in front of them.

Steve Grigorian, chief operating officer for the Economic Club, said the two earlier Ford Field plans were changed because camera angles would have made it appear there was no one in the stadium but Romney.

Who is going to want to show up for a Romney speech in the fall campaign?

OTOH, I suppose Romney could be followed around by busloads of Mormon young people to beef up the crowds.

He can be the pre-game show. Then he can seen in front of a large crowd, although nobody will actually be watching him.

because they just don't like Romney. Obama, OTOH, can be cool and win over the crowd by making it short and sweet and getting out of the way. Even people who aren't going to vote for Obama can't help but like him in a situation like that.

Bad weather today here in Michigan. It's going to take some creative CGI to make that place look like anything other than deserted.

I mean, seriously, how much money does it cost to rent Ford Field? What does it say about Romney and his people when they rent a 65,000 person venue for about 1000 people? Just throwing money away.

And an irresponsible spender.

I know that a lot has been made about Romney's endless supply of campaign cash, but he's been spending at twice the rate he's been raising money and this is a waste. I'm not sure the cost, but renting Ford Field has to cost a fortune and he could have spent the money better. Not to mention, now he has these embarrassing photos of an empty Ford Field to live down. I recently read that Romney's campaign had about $8 Million in cash on hand, it is not inconceivable that he could become cash strapped by Super Tuesday and the field would be a little more level.

Regardless, this is all money that he could have been stacking up for the general election.

Even the local Fox channel reported that "the crowd" would be there. That is not a crowd. So much of this is smoke and mirrors and I can only hope that people see it. And as for Romney being from Michigan I don't look at him that way and I have lived here all my 76 years. I am so sick of this, voted over a week ago and will celebrate when this primary is over.

Note all the business suits and lack of women in the "audience". There have been so many pictures of the nearly-empty stadium, he will never be able to cover it up. Certainly not like GW Bush who managed to get small groups of people photoshoped over and over to make it look like he was in front of a large crowd. Not that RMoney won't try. Bwwaaaahhhaaaaaaa

In 1992, Clinton had a rally scheduled for Bryant Park in midtown Manhattan. The park has a large rectangular open space, which I thought was a good spot for a rally because so many people could fit in there to hear Clinton. The way they set it up, however, was to put the stage diagonally across one corner, facing the corning. The result was that, just as with Romney in Ford Field, only a small fraction of the available area was suitable for people who wanted to see the speaker.

In a modern campaign, the people who are actually at the event are much less important than the images that will be transmitted by the mass media. Clinton in Bryant Park and Romney in Ford Field could have used the space in such a way as to reach many more people live, but that would have risked a poor turnout that would leave a lot of empty space and make the candidate look bad.
