Joe Lhota Says Bill de Blasio Is Reading "Directly Out Of The Marxist Playbook"

Source: NY Daily News

Republican Joe Lhota doubled down on his attack on rival Bill de Blasio’s leftist past Tuesday, charging the Democrat’s strategy is drawn “directly out of the Marxist playbook.”

Lhota hit de Blasio’s work in Nicaragua in the 1980s, where he did humanitarian work as an ally of the lefist Sandinista regime, which was fighting the U.S.-backed Contras.

“Bill de Blasio needs to explain himself -- and explain himself now -- to the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who escaped Marxist tyranny in Asia, Central America, and from behind the Iron Curtain in Eastern Europe,” Lhota said, amping up his criticism a day after he hit de Blasio for reportedly describing himself as a backer of “democratic socialism” in 1990.

I know its tough being down by 40 points. but really: Marxism? Sandinistas? That's the campaign argument you're going to give people in 2013?

And I wouldn't call it 'smug' to acknowledge that Marxism has been thoroughly discredited everywhere it's been tried, while capitalism (for all its faults) provides the greatest good to the greatest number.

Though In this case I guess I understand why Lhota would be desperate, He has a better chance of discovering himself to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ than he does of becoming Mayor of New York City.

And reading that piece from the NYT that Lhota is refering from just makes me more enthusiastic to campaign and vote for De Blasio, I highly respect a man who not only opposed our governments disgusting meddling in Nicaragua but also actually went down there himself to try and help people.

New York Times’ anti-lefty hit piece makes lefty look better
A totally non-shocking look at mayoral hopeful Bill de Blasio's activist past makes him... more sympathetic
BY ALEX PAREENE

The New York Times dropped a bombshell last night: As a young man, Democratic nominee for mayor of New York Bill de Blasio was… pretty left-wing. And he supported the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. And he once was in favor of democratic socialism. The Times presents this information as something they uncovered, as if de Blasio had somehow hidden it:

As he seeks to become the next mayor of New York City, Mr. de Blasio, the city’s public advocate, has spoken only occasionally about his time as a fresh-faced idealist who opposed foreign wars, missile defense systems and apartheid in the late 1980s and early 1990s. References to his early activism have been omitted from his campaign Web site.

In fact, de Blasio has spoken publicly about his time in Nicaragua as recently as last December. But the story of de Blasio’s youthful activism is interesting and not that widely known — I didn’t know about it, and I have actually been paying a decent amount of attention to this race — making it great material for a brief biographical sketch of the candidate as an idealistic young man.

This brief biographical sketch, though, sounds a bit like opposition research, or at least like an attempt to “shake up” the race and force the candidate to answer questions about his Commie past. It’s got hints of that very sober but slightly inflammatory tone that the Times puts on when it’s causing trouble. De Blasio, we’re told, “went to Nicaragua to help distribute food and medicine in the middle of a war between left and right. But he returned with something else entirely: a vision of the possibilities of an unfettered leftist government.” Unfettered! I don’t like the sound of that.

The Times says “[de Blasio's] time as a young activist was more influential in shaping his ideology than previously known” (this is the declaration that the information in this article is relevant news and not just old stories) “and far more political than typical humanitarian work.” Yes, because it was… activism? I mean what is “typical humanitarian work” here, exactly? De Blasio was working with the Quixote Center, a Catholic social justice group that fights poverty and economic inequality and that is inspired by liberation theology. This is actually very typical humanitarian work, and Catholic groups in particular have been doing it for years.

The current Pope would probably approve of him.

Humanitarian work. Hmmmph! Can't have that.

I have a lot of Catholic friends who are involved in humanitarian work. All great people. Idealistic with hearts of gold. That makes me more of a DeBlasio fan. I didn't know much about him really.

And its sad that it was almost certainly written as something of a hit piece. The sort of Activism that De Blasio dedicated those years of his life toward are something that should be admired and held up, not put down.

He'd been elected to the town government once, and when the re-election season came, he was in a tight primary -- so he send out a fundraising letter accusing one of his opponents of being a "communist"

Well, that got him a lot of attention and publicity, but not the way he hoped: this has been a progressive blue town for a long time, and a lotta folk around here prefer people that actually that do stuff, rather than yapping and snapping

It ended his political career
