Tea Party Lawmaker Says Debt Deal Worth Yielding on Obamacare
Source: Bloomberg News
U.S. Representative Dennis Ross, a Florida Republican, said he would support a broad spending deal that didnt include changes to the health-care law, becoming the first Tea Party-backed House lawmaker to publicly back off the fight that has shut down the government for five days.
Ross, ranked among the Houses most conservative members by both the Club for Growth and the American Conservative Union, said he shifted his position because the shutdown hasnt resulted in changes to the Affordable Care Act, which started Oct. 1, the same day government funding ran out. The shutdown also could hurt the party, he said.
Weve lost the CR battle, Ross, referring to the continuing resolution to authorize government spending, said in an interview. We need to move on and take whatever we can find in the debt limit.
Other lawmakers backed by the limited-government Tea Party movement, including Republican Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, are refusing to budge. Republican House Speaker John Boehner said yesterday the way to end the government shutdown would be for Democrats to negotiate and accept changes that would produce fairness under President Barack Obamas signature health-care law, also known as Obamacare....

(345 posts)But stories like this show that public pressure is helping. 2 months ago he was itching to close the government down. Ross's district includes a lot of people who work at MacDill AFB and while the military are receiving their paychecks, up to 1500 civilian workers have been furloughed. Also conveniences like the commissary are closed which puts a crimp in the wallets of the military families and retirees in the area.
I also think he's only hoping to get something out of the debt ceiling fight. A local article I read mentioned that while he thinks Repugs should refocus their fight on the debt ceiling, he also said he doesn't think they should default. I hope he sees the handwriting on the wall and is just looking for a face saving way to get out of this. In the meantime, let's keep the pressure on these assholes.

(5,105 posts)Repigs caused the shutdown, and are trying to reopen parts of gov't a little at a time, hoping to kill the social safety net. I do agree with writing to congress, but only to tell them to quit holding the nation hostage.

(5,125 posts)Was their hour late insanity regarding the ACA, which was not going to be rolled back, little more than a smokescreen for their real goal of using their ACA obstructionism as a wedge to revive a "Grand Bargain" gutting SS and Medicare, and which they could then falsely portray as being Obama's fault, and somehow, illogically associate the cuts with "Obamacare"?

(11,175 posts)I read this point on another DU thread and it makes sense. There are divisions within the Republican caucus. They would need several weeks just to come up with a plan that would be their opening position in any negotiations.
