Obama: If I were Snyder, I’d think about changing Redskins’ name

Source: NBC News

President Obama thinks Redskins owner Dan Snyder should consider changing the team’s name.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Obama was asked what he makes of the controversy surrounding the Redskins nickname. Although Obama said he doesn’t believe the Redskins or their fans are trying to offend anyone, he did say he believes that enough Native Americans are offended by it that it’s something the team needs to weigh.

“If I were the owner of the team and I knew that the name of my team, even if they’ve had a storied history, that was offending a sizable group of people, I’d think about changing it,” Obama said.

Obama did not say he believes the Redskins need to change their name, and he did not suggest that the government should take any action to compel the Redskins to change their name. But the mere fact of the President of the United States suggesting that changing the name might be a good idea shows just how hot a topic this has become.

1700 posts, and this one went apeshit over a Redskins post? What a buffoon.

Obama's currently kicking their ass, so you'll see plenty of these tantrumy unmaskings over the next view days.

Obama has these imbeciles wrapped around his little finger.

He has respect for all people, does not consider himself above others and has sincere and true Christian empathy and compassion for all humanity.

Who can fault that?

Just because someone doesn't understand or able to appreciate why someone may be offended, doesn't mean that they should ignore and negate the offense.

name for Native Americans dating way back to the 19th century. I suppose it's probably as offensive to them as "nigger" is to African-Americans.

Their tribes have very specific names that they use with pride, and the term Native American is generally considered the most appropriate and least offensive label for them as a whole.

I was friends with, told me "Redskin" is about the same as the "N" word to them. Frankly never to use it. It's highly insulting.

And if your ever in Ruidoso, NM go here, "Inn of the Mountain Gods" it's awesome! I would go hang out there all the time. Got nostalgic...

"Abbo", I think.

Skin coloration actually varies a great deal from tribe to tribe and even person to person.

Black and redskin have different histories. "Black" replaced other, far more racist terms. Redskin was the old racist term. The comparable term to "Black" would be "Indian". Redskin pretty much started out a slur and remains a slur.

If you're just making a point, I will say it's a bit different than the Redskins, because that term is actually considered derogatory. Although I'd agree with the viking (and others) points when it comes to names like The Chiefs.

That phrase should be banned from this site. It's a passive aggressive way of telling someone you don't agree with their opinion. The poster has been here since 2007, which is only 3 fewer years than you. How about you show the poster some respect and actually engage him or her in a debate instead of using that tired line.

... such as the Central Michigan University Chippewas. The Saginaw Tribe of the Chippewa and CMU has had a long standing relationship that has gone beyond sports for many years. Actually, they are neighbors in Mt. Pleasant. The Tribe informed the NCAA that CMU has their approval to use their name and the NCAA granted an exemption from the ban on that basis. I believe that FSU has the same arrangement. CMU does not use any indigenous imagery on their helmets/uniforms, nor do they have a 'mascot' per the Tribe's stipulations. As part of the Soo Tribe of the Chippewa I myself totally approve. CMU honors their friends and neighbors and the Tribe accepts that honor. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Sports teams are supposed to be like warriors, so in addition to Indian names, we get stuff like Pirates, Buccaneers, Raiders, Patriots, Fightin' Irish...

And fierce animal names: Lions, Bears, Eagles, Seahawks, Rams, Jaguars, Ravens

I like names that are descriptive of the city or region: 49ers, Packers, Cowboys, Steelers

So, I'd like to propose that the Redskins be renamed: The Washington Filibusterers, The Washington Fightin' Politicians, The Washington Bureaucrats...

We're talking about the color of their skin.. how would it be if other people's color of skin was inserted instead? Whiteskins, Blackskins, Brownskins, etc.. you get the picture.

And, apparently there have been enough people offended by it to warrant a debate.

thanks IDemo
