Senate Dems to call GOP’s bluff on debt limit

Source: Washington Post

Senate Democrats are planning to start the process this week for a Senate vote on a clean debt limit increase, sources tell me – a move that could call the bluff of Republicans in both chambers and force them to take a stand on whether they will allow default and economic destruction if Dems don’t accept their unilateral demands.

The move has the backing of the White House, according to a source familiar with discussions.

The idea is that Senate Dems will move their own clean debt limit bill, rather than wait for the House GOP to hold its own vote on either a clean CR funding the government (which Senate Dems have already passed with broad bipartisan support) or on a debt limit hike. Dems would be challenging Senate GOP moderates to vote for or against averting default and economic havoc outside of any set of conditions House Republicans insist must be attached to any measure raising the debt limit.

Senator John Cornyn is claiming no clean debt limit hike can pass the Senate, but Dems believe there may be at least half a dozen GOP Senators who would be willing to support one. A vote would put that to the test.

and defy this game for what it is

Leverage, party lines, horse trading is one thing

Extortion is another

And when GWBush was President ... he was supreme, you
had to toe the GOP line and stand with the President or you
were a traitor

NOW, GOP is screaming about the People's Will in the house,
everything the president does is wrong

Hypocrites!!

Obama himself and his administration have stated many times that they don't fill they have the authority to use the 14th amendment to override the debt limit. Since obama boxed himself in can't the treasury Secretary do it on his own? Sure there would be a court challenge but i'm sure ultimately the court would say no one has standing.

As American citizens, and knowing the Constitution was written for us, to help the US citizens, I believe we have a right, to insist the federal government follow the 14th amendment. We always hear anyone who owns a gun, that the 2nd amendment is the law of the land, well, anyone who wants this country to pay its bills should insist on evoking the 14th...

Did you really expect anything to get done before the midterms? Let them impeach. Impeachment = democratic house in 2014. And impeachment ends there and POTUS can get get things done his last two years that he pissed away the first two years

The Republicans impeached Clinton and they kept the House in the next election. Posters have been saying Obama will be impeached since he was elected and there have been no moves in that direction. I don't expect any.

Impeaching Obama in itself wouldn't automatically lead to dems taking the house, but as a continuation of this insanity it should would help dems to take the house.

I work in a mutual fund call center. Last week was pretty much business as usual, but people read the news over the weekend and are starting to meltdown. Nearly every call I took yesterday, the edginess was there...nerves are fraying in a big way.

Which is why they would need some Republicans. It's possible Snowe and McCain would at least vote for cloture if not the actual clean debt limit increase (it seems funny saying clean, I have to wonder if we should be calling the other "dirty" just for the hell of it). Then the debt increase would need 51. We could do that even if we have a couple Ds defect (which could happen).
