Minnesota AG asks U.S. to investigate Humana

Source: Strib

Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson said Friday she is asking the federal government to investigate Humana’s Medicare Advantage policies after uncovering what she said were “significant problems” reported by Minnesota patients and medical providers.

Affidavits gathered from 25 Minnesotans showed a pattern where Humana denied claims for medical services required by law, overcharged for co-payments and coinsurance, and failed to disclose the providers that are in the network. Swanson’s office also found that Humana didn’t follow procedures laid out by federal regulations for patients to appeal their cases.

“Basically we want to see Humana keep the promises they made to senior citizens,” Swanson said.

Humana, based in Louisville, Ky., is one of the nation’s largest health care insurers in Medicare Advantage, a private policy that covers seniors.

The police called an ambulance to transport me to the emergency room. Humana refused to pay the ambulance bill because the ambulance company was not an authorized provider. I dropped them at my next opportunity & did my best to tell everyone in the world about how they had dealt with me.

They raised ALL the copays and in particular, raised Mom's "pain" meds (all cheap generics) into unaffordable Tiers...I just checked last week to see if maybe for 2014 they would lower the cost...not! Still the highest of any plans in our zip code...WTF is that about?

Humana and their "big book" ads can kiss my ass. This is exactly why seniors need strong advocates, so that the "gotchas" can be exposed by these rotten companies.

... when someone turns 65 now, do they have to sign up to one of these private Ins companies, like Humana or Anthem, in order to get their Medicare? When my Mom passed back several years ago, she had Medicare and AARP supplemental. Just wondering....
