Report: Feeding antibiotics to livestock is bad for humans, but Congress won’t stop it
Source: Washington Post
The farm and pharmaceutical lobbies have blocked all meaningful efforts to reduce the use of antibiotics in raising livestock in America, a practice that contributes to a major public health risk, a study released Tuesday found.
The report says Congress has killed every effort to legislate a ban on feeding farm animals antibiotics that are important in human medicine. Not only that, but regulation of livestock feeding practices has grown weaker under the Obama administration, the study says.
Our worst fears were confirmed, said Bob Martin, executive director of the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, which issued the report. The Food and Drug Administrations statistics, he said, show that fully 80 percent of the antibiotics sold in this country are fed to food animals.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a report last month that found that 23,000 people die from antibiotic-resistant infections each year. The more a particular germ is exposed to antibiotics, the more rapidly it can develop resistance. Although the strongest factor contributing to resistance is overprescribing the drugs to humans, giving antibiotics to food animals adds to the problem, and consumer advocates have continued to push for tighter controls.

(1,269 posts)It's illegal in Canada, but here all they've managed to do is get it out of baby food containers.

(20,583 posts)our reps about this. It is only going to get worse until no antibiotics will be effective. That is a nightmare scenario.

(39,909 posts)...there would be no need for prophylactic antibiotics.
When chickens and cattle are forced into close confinement concentrations camps, standing in and eating their own feces that mega antibiotics are needed to keep them alive.
This is one of the many reasons my Wife & I moved to The Woods in 2006
and started raising our own.
We Free Range our chickens, and avoid feed that contains antibiotics.
In 7 years, we haven't had a bird die from an infection.
For those who garden,
avoid those large piles of "Free Manure Compost".
More than likely, it contains high levels of antibiotics, steroids, and growth hormones.

(1,464 posts)I remember hearing Michael Pollan on the radio saying the feedlot industry would crash in three days without the antibiotics.
He said the manure was so full of antibiotics that it should be treated as toxic waste.

(15,805 posts)It's everywhere. All the livestock feed available at local feed stores for family raised livestock contain antibiotics and even more additives like hormones and steroids for increased growth, muscle mass, or milk yield.
Only one store will special order higher priced drug-free feed that just has basic vitamins and minerals for good health. It costs by the pallet load which gets very expensive if you're raising more than one type of farm animal with each requiring their own specific feed formula, so we started a feed co-op to get "clean" feed.

(1,945 posts)About 40yrs ago I had friends that raised Quarter Horses, and as part of the daily feed ration they gave a supplement that was a wormer and included a low level antibiotic. I guess it was supposed to help keep the horses resistant to illnesses while keeping the parasite levels down.
One of their young mares who had seemed healthy got sick and died quickly, and the vet could not figure out why. So he did a necropsy and found that there were small abscesses all throughout her body. None were enough to kill her but all together it was enough to basically poison her. The vet felt that because she was on the low dose of antibiotic for a long period of time, the mare actually had less resistance to infection, which was taking over her body.
As I said this was back in the late '70s, and I honestly didn't see a formal necropsy report, but that is what the vet told them at the time. I never forgot that and never gave any antibiotics to my horses that were not part of a necessary treatment.

(19,253 posts)I was a teenager in the 90's, and grew up on a small family farm in Minnesota.
We'd make our own livestock feed in the grinder, mixing in soybeans, corn, alfalfa, bags of supplements, etc.
My dad would buy tetracycline from the local feed store in 2-lb bags dirt cheap. One to two bags for every ton of feed we ground up. It improved the animal's growth rates, so financially it was worth it.
That's a fuck-load of tetracycline.
So, it's not just Big Ag doing this on factory farms. It's become endemic to the farming industry as a whole.

All because we have made the mainline antibiotics near useless.
