ACLU asks Vikings, Minnesotans to avoid 'Redskins' name
Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press
Opponents of the "Redskins" NFL team name laid out their concerns Thursday in a meeting with officials from the public authority overseeing construction of the new Minnesota Vikings stadium, and the authority is expected to take up the issue at its meeting Friday morning.
The Washington, D.C., team is scheduled to play the Vikings in a Thursday night game Nov. 7 at the Metrodome.
The American Indian Movement is arguing the term "Redskins" should not be used in connection with a game being played in a public facility, said movement national director Clyde Bellecourt. "We're saying that the 'r' word is no different than the 'n' word," he said. Seeing derogatory logos and hearing vicious taunts from fans "has a tremendous psychological effect on our children," Bellecourt said.
...
"The name, logo and mascot are racist imagery that does not honor anyone, but instead perpetuate stereotypes that are particularly hurtful and offensive given the history of forced assimilation and brutality that Native Americans were forced to endure in Minnesota and throughout the country," ACLU-MN executive director Charles Samuelson said in a statement.

I'm sure this is another one of those places where a lot of us may disagree with ACLU, such as the ACLU defending NAMBLA or the Nazis at Skokie.

(22,000 posts)Complaints about them playing in public stadiums though won't do much. Public opinion and public pressure are needed on a larger scale if the change is going to be made.
The proposed idea of changing it to Redtails is interesting.

Guess there's selective acceptance of "outrage", right? When it's the "acceptable religion" getting "outraged", then it's okay, right?

(5,861 posts)They are mad because they want to continue to express their racist superiority in any way possible, even if it is in a small way.
Real people have suffered at the hands of White midwesterners racist attitudes. They are still feeling the effects to this day. The devil may be very offensive concept, but people were really killed and starved then branded with that slur.

(5,417 posts)I'm more concerned about the opinions on Native Americans. I could cite a 2004 poll, which 90% of native americans said it doesn't bother them.
If those numbers are the same today, then I don't see a problem with the name.

(9,753 posts)That in the larger community the 'r' word and the 'n' word are equally offensive. Historically that is simply not so.
Of course, if you're a member of one or the other (or both) groups, your opinion may be wildly different than mine. So be it.
If I were owner of the NFL team, I'd be telling myself that this issue, which has alternately slumbered and simmered for years, is probably not going away this time. And so a name change would be the commercially smart thing to do.
The fact that the issue has such a visibility now actually makes a name change easier and less risky. The problem with name changes is that you have to abandon all the positive associations your market has with the current name and hope that they successfully transfer to the new name. If the process fails, you can lose an asset worth millions or billions of dollars. But if you do it in the harsh glare of activist-driven publicity, you get so much free attention that the transition is more likely to succeed.

(56,582 posts)Seriously, people act like it's this great traditional team name; it was only changed from the "Braves" because they moved to Fenway and wanted to do marketing tie-ins with the Red Sox. And before anybody says "what about the Cowboys rivalry?", the name predates the Dallas franchise by 30 years. And hell, you could come up with something else that has a Cowboys tie in: "Rustlers" or "Bandits" or something (especially good given the "beltway bandits" meme). Or better yet, get rid of the rivalry because Dallas has no business being in the NFC East anyways.
It's time to change the team's name -- God knows it couldn't make things any worse.

How about "Los Angeles Brownskins?" or "San Francisco Yellowskins?" or "Detroit Blackskins?" or "Boston Whiteskins?"
I can't believe people actually support the offensive name for the sake of some football worship.
The name is disgusting and should be changed.

(1,415 posts)used to be the "Brown Indians." Yes, the nearby reservation was OK with it. Hell, one of the artists from the rez came and painted center court in the early 1990s.
Even though it was very popular, they still changed it in '92. Now they're the Pretty-Boys (Bonnies ... with some kind of shit-brown stupid dog as a mascot).

(1,464 posts)It doesn't matter whether you are offended or not. What matters is if Native Americans are offended, and clearly they are. Does your reaction trump theirs?
"Redskin" is not a neutral name. I could list derogatory names for Italians, Irish, Chinese, French, Israelis, Arabs, Vietnamese, Latin Americans, Blacks, Canadians. Would those be acceptable names for a pro sports team?
OK--now I see that I misread your post. Sorry for the over-heated reaction. The point still stands; it's just you are not an appropriate target for my ire.

So just call them "Washington" until no one remembers any other names associated with them.
