California gun-control votes trigger recall attempts

Source: San Jose Mercury News

SACRAMENTO -- Emboldened by the recall of two Colorado lawmakers last month, California gun-rights activists within a few weeks will be collecting petition signatures to kick several state lawmakers out of office, the activists announced Thursday.

Free California, a nonprofit founded by a Republican strategist who was involved in the Colorado recalls and who is now the spokeswoman for Assemblyman Tim Donnelly's campaign for governor, held a news conference with Donnelly and others Thursday on the steps of the state Capitol. Named as potential targets were state Sens. Norma Torres, D-Chino, and Ben Hueso, D-Chula Vista; Assemblywomen Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, and Sharon Quirk-Silva, D-Fullerton; and Assembly Speaker John Perez, D-Los Angeles.

Free California founder Jennifer Kerns later Thursday said the list may change but should be finalized in about two weeks. Then "we'll get to work immediately on collecting signatures" from holiday-season shoppers, she said.

"Based upon the reaction of the people in California, we can't not do it," she said. "We have to listen to the people."

My fellow Californian DUers, this is serious stuff. Sure, California may be progressive as heck. But the gun issue DOES get right wingers out to the polls, watch out! Just like how same-sex marriage brought out the fundies 5 years ago.

But hard to believe that many people are going to pay attention to this during holidays.

Just speculating here.

I'd also think about challenging the sig's. Play hardball.

3. Right, not paying attention... and they may not tell you what you are really signing.

THey may say some "reward ceremony" for the Reps hard work is planned. It's been done in the mid-west. A bait and switch thing to get lots of sigs and the words are right there, but under false pretenses. After, it's like, oh didn't you read it?

4. Interesting how they were chosen - I didn't know the required signatures

were based on the vote count:

Political opportunity is part of the calculation too, Kerns said: Her group will target lawmakers in swing districts, especially those who were put into office in special elections. It takes signatures equal to 12 percent of the votes cast in an officeholder's last election to put a recall on the ballot, so those sent to Sacramento by special elections require fewer signatures. Torres, Hueso and Gonzalez won their seats in special elections.

Perez I would expect would be a symbolic choice - I have no idea how the district is drawn, but I'd hope LA would be safely D. Fullerton, though, I can see being a potential problem...

Oddly enough, a lot of the resentment in the CO recall was about Californians who had moved to the state.

7. Just Like I Said Here In Colorado. Continuous Elections And Recalls The New GOP Norm.

What is happening here in Colorado is the new strategy the GOP is using. They can recall a legislator with as little as 10% of the vote. In Colorado 13% or less of the registered voters changed the two senators. Now we are in a fight in District 19.

In Colorado we are running into voters who are approached to sign without ever being told what it is. It is a violation and would nullify the election but with our crooked GOP Secretary of State he would allow the signature of your dog.

It is the GOP's new election nullification strategy. That idea includes districts where Dem candidates had a solid win. It is about minority rule. Recall guidelines need to be raised to 20% of the vote or more. It is too easy the way it was set up and I bet a lot of the recall laws were passed by GOP legislators.

The goal is to get enough GOPPERS to stop government completely.

It's ironic that gun nuts are babies that can't win in a fair fight.

Gerrymandering and cheating. It's all the withered old white males of the right have left.
