Greenland removes ban on uranium mining

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) Greenland's parliament has voted in favor of removing a 25-year-old ban on uranium mining, paving the way for an industrial boom that the Arctic island hopes will help it gain independence from former colonial master Denmark.
Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of Denmark, wants to step up its mining of rare earths, valuable elements used in the production of smartphones weapons systems and other modern technologies. But uranium is often found mixed into rare earths, so the ban was blocking key mining activity in southern Greenland.

In a 15-14 vote with two absentees, the parliament backed late Thursday the center-left governing coalition's desire to remove the ban.
Many Greenlanders want to use the island's mineral resources as a way to reduce dependency on a subsidy from Denmark which now accounts for about two-thirds of the island's economy. Denmark is open to allowing Greenland greater independence, but there is currently no way the island can support its current costs without the subsidy.

(3,557 posts)Basically, they found deposits of rare earth elements and whatnot that is estimated to be worth $2-3 trillion. However, those elements also occurred in the presence of uranium. Unless the ban on mining uranium was lifted, they couldn't legally mine the rest of the rare earth elements.
If you do the math, all 56,000 citizens on Greenland could become multimillionaires.
I just hope that greed doesn't get the best of them and lead the people of Greenland to destroy their environment and Greenland for their children.

(5,169 posts)If we are ever going to reduce our dependence on petroleum for our energy needs, it is going to take a LOT of rare earth magnets, copper, and lithium.
But we need to quit digging in the ground for them. We need to start doing underground tunnel mining, with the waste and tailings kept to a minimum.
As for Greenland: it should be a "global environmental sanctuary", depopulated and supported by the world as a whole.

(9 posts)The rare earth metals are always recycled... So its a once and done process to acquire enough material to electrify our world and cease to use fossil fuels.

Some opponents say the open-cast mine will cause environmental damage; others are concerned about plans to bring in up to 3,000 mainly Chinese workers.
The iron ore deposit is located 150km (about 90 miles) from Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.
