Cheney Bashes Clinton On Benghazi, Obama On Bin Laden Raid

Source: TPM

CAITLIN MACNEAL – OCTOBER 25, 2013, 12:07 PM EDT

Former Vice President Dick Cheney on Thursday criticized former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on her handling of the Benghazi attack and President Obama on the way he approached the Osama bin Laden raid.

Cheney said that Clinton did not take responsibility for her role in the response to the 2012 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya.

"No, she clearly wasn't hands on, and now she doesn't want to be hands on. And she’s doing everything she can to avoid responsibility for what clearly fell into her bailiwick," Cheney told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. "And what I always recall is her testimony saying what difference does it make? And the fact of the matter is it makes a huge difference. And we should have been able to protect those people or certainly go to their rescue."

Cheney also criticized Obama for not taking better advantage of the intelligence he had on bin Laden.

Had he and Bush been in charge, we would have invaded and spent billions to accomplish regime change in Canada after the Benghazi attack. We really missed an opportunity to put soldiers needlessly at risk.

As for Bin Laden, it's hard to believe Obama would get the guy when clearly our policy was trot him out every 6 months to keep everyone scared. It's like Obama didn't want to rule by fear. Amateur.

that the RW has taken (probably directed by this fool and Rove) to bring him down. I was thinking earlier how Obama has done an amazing job of staying above their mess and deflecting what they've thrown at him. He seems to have come on board as President well-versed on the evil capabilities of the RW and is making preemptive moves that protect him (Obama protecting himself) before they can set their plans in motion.

You had in hand at Tora Bora and how well that worked out for you. Or the August 6, 2001 PDB saying "bin Laden determined to strike inside the US" and what the outcome from that was. Besides, it wasn't like Obama could have kept bin Laden's death a secret and thus allowed others to control the messaging. Lastly, what is this "huge difference" you are talking about regarding Benghazi Cheney. Don't you think you are obligated to spell that out if you make the charge or are you just jumping on the BENGHAZI, BENGHAZI, BENGHAZI bandwagon.

You may have had a heart transplant Cheney but you still don't have a heart.

Remember when former Vice Presidents just faded into obscurity, usually as soon as they were elected rather than waiting for retirement?

I'll get outraged at Cheney when he says that interrogation techniques the Bushies borrowed from the Spanish Inquisition weren't torture or that the War against Iraq was a great benefit to America and the world for liberating the Iraqi people -- from their mineral rights.

However, when the Big Dick brings up events spun into scandals in the active imagination of Darrell Issa and talks critically about President Obama's handling of the mission to kill Osama bin Laden, then it time to roll over over and go back to sleep.

By the way, Big Dick, do you remember this performance from your pet Frat Boy?

...but the GOP and its media/ideological allies are hammering on Benghazi as though assaults on diplomatic facilities and workers from U.S. and allied missions were never seen until September 11th, 2012. The U.S. ambassador to Lebanon was assassinated in 1976, and the American Embassy in Beirut was bombed more than once during the 1980s.

http://lebanon.usembassy.gov/about_the_embassy.html

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/2367311.stm

Unfortunately many people either don't know the history, can't be bothered to look it up, and/or just parrot the talking points they get from GOP congressmen and right-wing media.

I've heard various estimates of the number of people killed in attacks on U.S. installations during the time Bush and Cheney were in office. The story below records nearly a hundred fatalities. There are others at the link.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bob-cesca/13-benghazis-that-occurre_b_3246847.html

January 22, 2002. Calcutta, India. Gunmen associated with Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami attack the U.S. Consulate. Five people are killed.

June 14, 2002. Karachi, Pakistan. Suicide bomber connected with al Qaeda attacks the U.S. Consulate, killing 12 and injuring 51.

October 12, 2002. Denpasar, Indonesia. U.S. diplomatic offices bombed as part of a string of "Bali Bombings." No fatalities.

February 28, 2003. Islamabad, Pakistan. Several gunmen fire upon the U.S. Embassy. Two people are killed.

If you haven't already, you are going to encounter people who will misuse "Four dead in Ohio" to invoke the four men killed in Benghazi. The next time someone does that, ask them if they have heard of any of the above, or of the barracks bombings in 1983, or the multiple attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. People get away with skewing the story because we let the ignorant and the vicious control the story.
