Southwest CEO Opens Door to Baggage Fees

Source: WSJ

The chief executive of Southwest Airlines Co. hinted Thursday that the carrier could soon start charging for checked baggage if the flying public comes to accept the fees that other airlines charge. Southwest and JetBlue Airways Corp. are the last two big airlines in the U.S. that allow travelers to check at least one bag free on domestic flights.

Southwest has made its "bags fly free" policy a pillar of its advertising campaigns. And on an earnings conference call Thursday, Chief Executive Gary Kelly said the carrier has no plans to charge for bags at least through next year, in part because he believes its policy of two free checked bags per passenger brings the airline business.

But, in one of his strongest hints to date that the policy could change, Mr. Kelly said that if fliers come to better understand and maybe even prefer "an a la carte approach…we'd be crazy not to provide our customers with what they want."

(snip)

Since other airlines began charging for first checked bags in 2008, Southwest's planes have gotten about 10 percentage points fuller, reaching nearly 81% of capacity in the third quarter.

Many customers go out of their way to fly Southwest for its bag policy. Thomas Arthur, a corporate-asset manager from Jackson, Miss., said he has flown to a Southwest airport and then rented a car to drive to his final destination just to save on baggage.

to the gills. If there's no more room for carry ons as I'm boarding, the case is put in the baggage hold at the last minute free of charge. Charging for a bag is an unconscionable racket. In the future I fully expect to see credit card swipers affixed to the plane's lavatory doors. Anything for a buck.

some airlines charge for checked bags AND carry on bags. If you choose to carry a bag on that meets the measurement requirements, it's actually more than if you check the bag, at least it is with Spirit Airlines. And don't forget it's both ways that you pay for the bag. If you want a particular seat such as an aisle seat or window seat, you pay for that too.

I'm tired of all their crap. I haven't flown in about 4 years and I decided to go South for a week only to find out all this baloney. Yeah, they advertise a decent rate, but by the time you find out all the add-ons, it's not a decent rate at all. I honestly don't know why we have become so complacent in this country.

cheap beyond belief. I worked as a travel agent back in the 80s when there were none of these ridiculous fees. A while back I called American to see about a seat assignment on a flight and was told by the reservationist that she could reserve a specific seat for me, but that it would cost $25.00. I know for a fact it can be done with a couple of keystrokes and I told her so. Her response :"I'm sorry but that's the policy." Huge rip-off. They get away with this crap because they can.

the only one, at least in the U.S.

It will be sad if all of them will decide to charge for both carryons and checked luggage. I think that charging for checked luggage forces many to get as much as they can on carryon which just delays departing and frays everyone's nerves. It is not as if most overhead compartments can accommodate carryons lengthwise.

Ryanair, the Irish airline that has elevated nickeling and diming passengers to an art form, has found another way to suck money out of people’s pockets — installing pay toilets on airplanes.

The CEO of the famously cheap company announced, with a straight face, that he’s toying with the idea of putting pay toilets in every one of the airline’s 168 Boeing 737s. The idea has pilots and passengers freaking out, the airline’s flacks scrambling to contain the damage and us wondering what happens to the poor schmuck who can’t break a tenner.

"One thing we have looked at in the past and are looking at again is the possibility of maybe putting a coin slot on the toilet door so that people might actually have to spend a pound ($1.43) to spend a penny in future," (the windbag) O’Leary said today during an appearance on the popular morning talkfest BBC Breakfast. He seemed genuinely perplexed to hear some passengers fly without cash. "I don’t think there is anybody in history that has got on board a Ryanair aircraft with less than a pound," he said.

Should the plan come to pass, it would mark a new low for an airline that hasn’t seen a fee it didn’t like. Ryanair is Europe’s largest low-fare carrier and a poster child for no-frills service, forcing customers to pony up for everything from using a credit card to speaking with a living, breathing customer-service rep. Later this year it plans to rip out its ticket counters to save a few more bucks. And to think U.S. travelers went nuts last year when US Airways announced it would charge for beverages and snacks — a policy it has reversed because it made the company look cheap.

They didn't actually go through with it, but still...

it for free at the gate. It wasn't because I stuffed my bags, but rather because they stuffed the planes with too many people and they were worried about loading/unloading times of passengers if everyone had a carry on. I'd say it had to been pretty close to 100% of the time that happened.

*I flew mostly on American and United.

Yes, I'm sure all customers want to pay more to fly!

There was a time when flying wasn't so bad. The flight attendants acted like they were glad to see you, and they didn't rush you like they do today.

The public just needs to say NO and put a stop to all the fees it seems every company charges today.

no reality to what flying has become. After enduring the indignities associated with TSA, the traveller is all too frequently subjected to rude airline personnel who treat him like a nuisance. After a horrific experience on Hawaiian Air this summer - in which everything that could go wrong (short of crashing) did - it will be a long time before I'll be ready to fly again.

Drove every time. I just rent a car and off I go through Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and finally California. I drove straight through too, stopping occasionally for naps. Beautiful scenery!

But, I've had it with the airlines.

Now, I know this "solution" won't help you with your trips to Hawaii...

outcry and refusal by the public to be subjected to this greedy charge. So greed stikes again. It's not enough for Southwest Airlines to have a great marketing message to get more people to fly their airline (I know that's the reason I fly Southwest) but now they see the potential to pick our pockets - because all the other airlines are doing it.

There is no stopping this. When every year companies have to do better financially than the year before - that money needs to come from somewhere. Ninety-nine percent of the time it comes in the form of raising prices and adding fees. I live in the Chicago area and don't go into the city anymore. It's too costly. They sold the parking meters to a private firm that is charging outrageous amounts for parking. They are putting up red light and speed cameras all around the city. Just to go into the city to shop it costs an arm and a leg.

If Southwest goes the way of other airlines they are making a bad decision. Unfortunately it is greed that motivates.

1) Fuel surcharge linked to passenger weight ( weight measured at the boarding gate).
2) $2/minute to use the toilet in the plane - do your business at the airport and SAVE.
3) Hungry?? - you have to buy the $10.00 shit sandwich else get ready to fork out $5.00 deodorizing and cleaning fee to bring your own food. Hey you save $5.00 - PLUS you dont have to eat our shitty food - that's a WIN WIN !!!!!
4) Standing passengers get a $100 discount ( isn't that a clever way to say that it's extra $100 bucks for a seat).
5) Get $1000 discount to put your noisy kids in the cargo hold ... Of course you could have them fly with you - but bad luck on that discount.
6) Hey we dont discriminate against smokers ... you are welcome to use our all new smoke pod (for a ridiculous fee of course) ... but we are sure the privilege will be well worth it...

FYI.

I prefer to check my bag, especially if I have to change planes. For me too much hassle to drag the bag through the airport. However, I discovered recently that if you want to check your bag, at it is the size of a carry-on, just carry it through TSA, and then before you board, they will ask for volunteers to check your bag once the overhead space starts to get full. At that point, they check it for free.
