NSA's Web site is MIA, cause unclear
Source: CNET
The NSA's public-facing Web site has been down for several hours Friday, with some speculating that the outage is due to a denial-of-service attack meant to protest the agency's surveillance programs. It's not clear, however, what the cause is.
Russia Today pointed to a couple of tweets from Twitter users that it said were "loosely affiliated" with the hacking collective Anonymous, saying the tweets suggested the group was responsible. But the tweets aren't conclusive. (One says, "So If it's a attack comming from me, or maybe from a country? won't say! It's just looks like a start of a cyber war."
And Business Insider called out a tweet from @AnonyOps that says, somewhat amusingly (though still inconclusively), "Aww don't panic about http://nsa.gov being down. They have a backup copy of the internet."
On the other hand, Gizmodo noted that the Anonymous-related tweets were sluggish in appearing and it pointed to a tweet it said underlined the fact that "it's a bit weird for an attack on a website as prominent as the NSA's to go unclaimed."

WASHINGTON (AP) The National Security Agency says its website nsa.gov was inaccessible for several hours during a scheduled update.
The agency says an internal error in the system caused the problem.
There had been speculation on the Internet that the online site had been hit with a denial-of-service attack, but the agency said that was not true.

(8,821 posts)You have my most sincere sympathy.
Those guys are off-the-map-out-of-control liars trying to defend an obscenely bloated budget and heretofore unheard of, extra-Constitutional snooping powers by any means necessary. They gathered info on foreign heads of State so as to use that information as a means of protecting and justifying their continued control of a World-wide intelligence empire. They need to be stopped before they cause yet more damage to our international standing.
Shut them down completely, and start over again from the foundation. They are simply doing far more harm than good for the United States and its people.

The shadowy National Security Agency said late Friday that it was a glitch that brought down its public website for a few hours, not hackers as some claimed online.
NSA.gov was not accessible for several hours tonight because of an internal error that occurred during a scheduled update, the spy agency said in an emailed statement. The issue will be resolved this evening. Claims that the outage was caused by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack are not true.
Earlier this evening online server trackers noted the NSAs website had been down for at least six hours, and the site continues to be inaccessible for some users. Earlier an NSA spokesperson told ABC News the agencys internal, sensitive network was not at all compromised. No classified information is in danger, the spokesperson said.

(18,421 posts)Before this "update" caused issues. Certainly they could have. And it wouldn't take more than six hours to do. WTF?
