White House official sees need for 'constraints' on NSA spying

Source: Reuters

The White House said on Monday that some constraints are needed in U.S. surveillance practices in the wake of embarrassing revelations about the sweeping nature of U.S. spying.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said that with new intelligence-gathering capabilities, "We recognize there needs to be additional constraints on how we gather and use intelligence."

Carney's comment, along with a tweet from National Security Adviser Susan Rice that a "proper balance" is needed, suggested some changes might be in the offing on the scale of U.S. electronic spying as part of a review of the collection activities of the National Security Agency and other U.S. intelligence agencies.

The review is to be completed by year's end.

If I'm not mistaken, this crap was started under George W. Bush, and President Obama needs to just order the NSA to stop it....period!

The constraints are already there -- it's just a matter of the administration recognizing and abiding by them.

to decide whether the sub-committee's findings were accurate. Then another committee to make suggestions on those findings. Then one person will throw it all out.

Although hearings will provide a feel-good that something is 'being done'...as if anyone can put the toothpaste back in the tube, or would want to.

And the wiretapping started in 2002. This is a Bush administration policy that the White House will put an end to.
