McDonald's squeezes out Heinz over new CEO pick

Source: CBS News

McDonald's is making a big switch at some of its restaurants. After 40 years, it's parting ways with Heinz ketchup. The reason goes back to a long-standing rivalry.

On Friday, McDonald's, the world's largest restaurant chain, announced diners would no longer be squeezing Heinz ketchup in any of its 34,000 stores. The decision was made after Heinz appointed the former head of Burger King, Bernardo Hees, as its new chief executive officer. In three years, Hees oversaw major changes at the struggling burger chain, remaking Burger King into a viable competitor to the mighty Big Mac.

In a statement, the Illinois-based company said, "As a result of recent management changes at Heinz, we have decided to transition our business to other suppliers over time."

Richard Levick, chief executive officer of Levick Public Relations, said, "It appears to be that Hees has been brought in, he was the former CEO of Burger King, and so they feel that it's inappropriate that their 40-year relationship with Heinz continue. There are a lot of other places that they can get ketchup."

Burger King beats forecasts as McDonald's drops Heinz
By Tiffany Hsu
October 28, 2013, 9:01 a.m.

Burger King stock was on the upswing Monday after the fast-food company said its profit surged nearly 33% in the third quarter, beating predictions from Wall Street.
The Miami-based company said its adjusted net income soared to $81.1 million, or 23 cents a share, from $61.1 million, or 17 cents a share, during the same period a year earlier.

<>

Rival McDonald’s was up too, rising less than a percentage point, or 48 cents, to $95.26 a share.

The Oak Brook, Ill.-based quick-serve behemoth confirmed this week that it is ditching its multi-decade arrangement with H.J. Heinz Co. to serve its ketchup.

The rationale: Heinz is now run by Bernardo Hees, current vice chairman and former chief executive of Burger King.

Hees transitioned to the helm of Heinz earlier this year after the company was purchased by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway company and Burger King owner 3G Capital.

In the Philippines, a lot of ketchup is made from banana and almost all tomato sauce is "philippines style" meaning very sweet. Hot dogs are not spicy they are sweet, even McDonalds here sucks they use the sweet style ketchup, pizza they don't use much tomato sauce at all and it is also sweet. Salted fish is one exception to the sweet rule. I have to go buy from the imported food section to get something less "sweet" for ketchup or tomato sauce.
