And if he doesn't "know" he'll make it up.

(42,239 posts)Ströbele warned of the legal complications that would come with Snowden leaving Russia, where he has been granted asylum after leaking documents on mass NSA surveillance. Witnesses to parliamentary enquiries are usually given the financial support and legal protection required for them to travel to Germany.
>
The latest developments will encourage those who hope Germany may eventually grant political asylum to Snowden. In June, his application for asylum there was rejected by the foreign ministry because, legally, he had to apply for asylum in person and on German soil. If Snowden was brought to Germany as a witness, he could meet these requirements.
Activists are said to be considering other means of getting Snowden to Germany. Under paragraph 22 of the German residence law, Snowden could be granted a residence permit "if the interior ministry declares it to be in Germany's political interest". After reports of Merkel's mobile phone being hacked by the NSA, such conditions could be said to apply.

Thomas Oppermann, of the Social Democrats, said: "Snowden's claims appear to be credible, while the US government has blatantly lied to us on this matter. That's why Snowden could be an important witness, also in clearing up the surveillance of the chancellor's mobile."

(55,445 posts)I thought one of the general reasons for staying there was protection from any U.S. agents or whatever who wanted to see something "unfortunate" happen to him...
Germany is chock full of Americans and U.S. military....

(42,239 posts)He could do it by video link but if he did go to Germany he could apply for asylum there - that has to be by physically being in the country.

(55,445 posts)If it has been revealed that the U.S. can tap Merkel's cell phone, how does Snowden think he'll *NOT* be under constant surveillance?
And that's assuming he isn't immediately arrested when the plane lands...I thought there was an extradition agreement with Germany?
dipsydoodle
(42,239 posts)he was to be granted asylum then the extradition agreement wouldn't wash. I still think they'll use a video link.

(785 posts)I want to see Bank CEO's go to jail instead of paying fines for lawbreaking. The same goes for offshore tax cheaters. I want dirt on the activist Supreme Court judges that are cockblocking any progressive change. I want uncut rehearsals for brainwasher shows like 'This Week in Washington with Gwen Ifill' to illustrate to people it's all a scam (like most of the msm). Yes, we need more whistleblowers. Now.

It would give me great pleasure to see them all disrobed, tar and feathered, in the public square, exacting punishment appropriate to the crimes they all perpetrated on the citizenry; and at once restoring our inalienable rights; which were (once upon a time) enshrined in our constitution.

(7,321 posts)Telling the Truth is NOT a crime! (nor should it ever be).
Telling the Truth is a PUBLIC SERVICE!
Having to "State the Obvious" repeatedly anywhere in our country should be considered nothing short of bizarre, if not outright alarming with regard to the general public's perception of what we're supposed to be about as a nation.
Indeed, having to face severe criminal charges and prosecution for performing a public service is nothing short of flipping democracy into totalitarian state, officially.
