Nearly 2,000 votes in Fairfax possibly uncounted
Source: Washington Post
Fairfax County election officials said Friday that they think that nearly 2,000 votes went uncounted after Tuesdays election, a technical error that could affect the outcome of the still unresolved race for Virginia attorney general.
The error stemmed from problems with a broken machine at the countys Mason district voting center, officials said.
The machine, known as an optical scanner, recorded 723 votes on election night before it broke down, elections officials said. Its memory card was then placed inside another, working machine, which recorded a total of 2,688 votes.
But that tally was not included in the statement of election results delivered by the individual voting center to the county board of elections. Instead, officials received the statement that reported the 723 votes from the broken machine.

The Wasserman projection is that Herring is now 130 votes behind: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvOrrxBeaarVdGhvNWZZN2UzUVY1bDVoYW83bWszM1E#gid=0

Good news for Herring (D): there were indeed 3,008 uncounted votes. Bad: he only won 68.8% of them, not enough to overtake Obenshain's lead.

(44,974 posts)Winning 68.8% of 3008 votes would give Herring a 1000 extra votes.
So why is Mr. Wasserman saying it's not enough to overcome the lead?

So, 1000 is not enough for Herring to take the lead.
Wasserman's projection of Herring being 130 behind is 'after' corrections: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvOrrxBeaarVdGhvNWZZN2UzUVY1bDVoYW83bWszM1E#gid=0
1272 minus 1142 = 130 in Obenshain's favor.

(70,567 posts)And let me guess those 2,000 votes were from an area that tended to vote blue.
For years now we have seen and it has been documented that ever since electronic
voting came into use all across the country there has been "a drift" of the vote to
republicans @ a #s much > then the M.O.E. (margin of error).
BTW much of the democratic establishment refuses to acknowledge that the repugs
have been cheating for years.

(131,077 posts)the whole of Fairfax County tends to go blue. I don't know about the particular voting district (or machine,) but surely largely blue.

(44,974 posts)If there really is 3008 uncounted votes, and Herring won 68 % of them, that should be enough to overcome the lead.

(131,077 posts)and counting, LisaL!

(44,974 posts)So winning 68.8 % of 3008 extra votes would have been enough to overcome this lead.
But apparently not?
elleng
(131,077 posts)but as I haven't followed the numbers closely, I don't have a basis to compare.
