Train derails in New York; 2 deaths reported

Source: CNN

New York (CNN) -- A Metro-North train derailed Sunday morning at Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx, the New York Fire Department said.

At least two died, a New York City police source familiar with the investigation and rescue told CNN.

About 100 firefighters are responding to the scene. Multiple injuries are reported, according to CNN affiliates WABC and WCBS.

Two to five cars came off the track shortly after 7 a.m., fire officials told WCBS. They did not enter the water, the station reported.

A Metro-North passenger train derailed on a curved section of track in the Bronx on Sunday morning, killing four people and injuring 63 as it came to rest just inches from the water, authorities said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the deaths at a news conference at the site of the crash near the Spuyten Duyvil station. He said authorities believe everyone at the site has been accounted for and that the National Transportation Safety Board is en route.

Three of the dead were found outside the train, and one was found inside, authorities said. Their families haven't yet been notified.

Eleven people are believed to be in critical condition, authorities said. The train operator was among the dozens injured, Cuomo said.

Did you expect him to ignore such a huge event? And make no mistake, this is huge here in the Hudson Valley - one of our very well traveled train lines is going to be out of commission for probably the rest of the year - during the holidays when it's used more than any other time.

Not much info; just says the operator said the brakes didn't work (according to an anonymous source).

A senior city official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the train operator had told emergency medical workers in the aftermath of the crash that the brakes had failed, but that the operator’s account had not been confirmed. At a news conference Sunday evening, Earl F. Weener of the National Transportation Safety Board said its investigators had yet to interview the operator of the train, who was among those injured, or the rest of the train crew.

"The train’s engineer, identified as William Rockefeller, was injured and has yet to be formally interviewed by investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board, according to government officials. Mr. Rockefeller, who was released from the hospital late Sunday, is expected to be interviewed on Monday afternoon.

It is unclear how fast the train was going on Sunday morning, but a Metropolitan Transportation Authority official said the engineer told emergency medical workers that when he realized it was heading into the curve too quickly, he “dumped the brakes,” an emergency maneuver, and though the train slowed somewhat, it then derailed.

A pair of “black box” data recorders that were recovered from the train, according to the safety board, could provide an initial appraisal of Mr. Rockefeller’s account: They are expected to yield information about the train’s speed and how the brakes might have been applied.

Officials suggested on Monday morning that the train appeared to have clearly been traveling in excess of 30 miles per hour, which is the maximum allowable speed through the curve. (Along a stretch north of Spuyten Duyvil, the maximum allowable speed is 70 m.p.h.)

A key question, the authorities said, would be not only whether the brakes were applied — and when — but also why the train was traveling so fast as to require an emergency maneuver."

Tragic event that probably could have been avoided.
