Former Senator to Challenge Shaheen in New Hampshire

Source: Roll Call

A former senator said Sunday he will challenge Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., in 2014 –but it’s not the Republican some expected to hear from on the race.

Former Sen. Robert C. Smith, who served two terms before losing the GOP nomination in 2002, told WMUR that he has decided to run for his former seat. This is a change of heart from October, when Smith said he had decided not to run.

Smith opted to run as most every other top Republican in the state, including former Reps. Charlie Bass and Jeb Bradley, decided against it.

For months, Republicans had been waiting for word from former Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., who has spent a considerable amount of time in the Granite State this year and is considering a challenge to Shaheen. He is still undecided, but Republicans in the state, including Sen. Kelly Ayotte, have said he would put the seat in play.

Show ol' Scotty in his truck carpetbagging all over the United States running for Senate. Where will Scott run next?

Seriously, Shaheen could turn him into the white Alan Keyes so fast it'd make his head spin.

He was too chicken to run against Markey and then did not want a primary fight with Baker. His strange "whatever" twitter responses likely have further dimmed anyone taking him seriously.

Not to mention, his hair is receding - and that could hurt his biggest asset - his looks.

He was primaried by Sununu who had the support of the President. The only redeeming thing he ever did that I know of likely will not endear him to Republicans. He endorsed John Kerry for President. Obviously this might(and likely was) because of Bush supporting Sununu, but he went far beyond just rejecting Bush. He praised Kerry for his work on the committee Smith was also on POW/MIA from Vietnam, his patriotism and his character.

The link shows how far right he was - there is a lot of information in the comments by surprised NH Democrats. I doubt he will have a prayer of a chance against Shaheen. (His opting in may keep carpet bagger chicken Scott Brown out.)
