UN implicates Bashar al-Assad in Syria war crimes

Source: BBC

The UN's human rights chief has said an inquiry has produced evidence that war crimes were authorised in Syria at the "highest level", including by President Bashar al-Assad.

It is the first time the UN's human rights office has so directly implicated Mr Assad.

Commissioner Navi Pillay said her office held a list of others implicated by the inquiry.

The UN estimates more than 100,000 people have died in the conflict.

Al Jazeera, Scores killed in Syria 'barrel' bombings

Scores of people have been killed in a two-day assault by the Syrian army on a northern rebel-held town near the city of Aleppo.

Helicopters bombarded al-Bab on Sunday, killing at least 30 people including four women when they dropped improvised 'barrel bombs' on a market district, sources in the town told Al Jazeera.

Activists said that the death toll could rise because many people were severely wounded in the raid.

The attack came a day after 27 people were reported killed in a similar attack on the same town by President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

Lets see what they have to say about cheney, rumsfeld, bremmer, mccrystal, petreayus, Colonel James Steele and the rest of the war makers.

Then UN Commissioner Navi Pillay might have some credibility.

Whats the death toll in Iraq? 1.2 million?

I can't see him leaving Syria willingly. Maybe it's a first step in ending the civil war.

What a tragedy for the people of Syria this has been for years. I didn't expect the UN to get involved any further.

Interesting. Thanks for posting.

Asked to clarify her remarks, she said: “Let me say that I have not said that a head of state is a suspect. I was quoting the fact-finding mission, which said that based on their facts, responsibility points at the highest level.”
