States losing billions in refusing to expand Medicaid, report finds

Source: NBC News

Texas will lose $9.2 billion in 2022; Florida says goodbye to $5 billion; Georgia is out $4.9 billion. A new report details just how much states are losing because they don’t want to expand Medicaid under Obamacare, and it’s not chump change.

Red states may be sticking to their Republican beliefs in small government, but the Commonwealth fund finds they are passing up billions in federal funding by saying no to the Medicaid expansion.

“By choosing not to participate, Texas, for example, will forgo an estimated $9.58 billion in federal funding in 2022. Taking into account federal taxes paid by Texas resi dents, the net cost to taxpayers in the state in 2022 will be more than $9.2 billion,” the report by Sherry Glied and Stephanie Ma of New York University says.

“We find that the Medicaid expansion will be a relatively large source of federal revenue to state enter prises," the report adds. States expanding Medicaid will get, on average, more than twice as much in federal funding than they get in federal highway funds, they said.

2. Good start, but they miss the most important bit

Governors have implied this is some kind of trap because in the out years, the federal budget pays "only" 90%. SO these pea-brains believe, or at least are arguing, that "sure, maybe it is good in 2014 but it will kill us in 2020.

No. That's not how economics works. If you get $1,000,000,000 in federal support, that money mostly goes into the payrolls and other taxable payments. That billion dollars kicks off a huge amount in sales and income taxes for the state. And then there is the multiplier. This is a big economic development program. Nurses that are employed because of Medicaid expansion are no longer receiving assistance because they were unemployed. And they spend their salaries at restaurants and other stores. That pays more salaries which leads to more tax revenue for the state.

By 2020, the state does have to put up $100,000,000 to match that billion. But they will easily collect that much in additional taxes (and reduction of services for the unemployed) resulting from that extra economic activity.

Even if Republicans don't give a shit about anybody's health -- and they don't -- this is a no-brainer economic development program. Every Governor who has refused to expand Medicaid should be attached every single day on the basis of his economic stupidity.

Fl.'s incoming R Majority leader has stated he won't bring Medicaid to a vote again and won't let Dems bring it to the floor for a vote either. They are so fucking stupid, they really just think poor people should die and are so blindly opposed to anything Obama does that they are willing to kill the citizens of this state just to make sure the ACA doesn't work well in FL. They think that poor people will be pissed off because of the cost and will blame the Dems, because they passed this program. Unfortunately, with all the adverse ads, they could be right - sickening as that is.

This is why we must attack them on ECONOMIC grounds. Forget about the health of the poor people. You governors don't care about them, and the people who vote for you don't care about them. In fact they might even like you more when you show pure contempt for the poor.

But passing on a no-brainer economic development program hurts EVERYBODY, not just the poor people.

But history will show that they were especially wrong on opposing healthcare reform, and it will cost the GOP dearly.
