Nelson Mandela dead at 95
Source: NBC News
Nelson Mandela, the revered South African anti-apartheid icon who spent 27 years in prison, led his country to democracy and became its first black president, died Thursday at home. He was 95.
Though he was in power for only five years, Mandela was a figure of enormous moral influence the world over a symbol of revolution, resistance and triumph over racial segregation.
He inspired a generation of activists, left celebrities and world leaders star-struck, won the Nobel Peace Prize and raised millions for humanitarian causes.
South Africa is still bedeviled by challenges, from class inequality to political corruption to AIDS. And with Mandelas death, it has lost a beacon of optimism.

(10,857 posts)I may never achieve anything of lasting value to the human race, but I had the chance to be one of Mandela's many, many admirers, and to appreciate his greatness while he was still in the process of realizing it. That was awesome, and it still makes me smile today. What a guy.

(1,805 posts)said it better myself. What a sad day, yet a day to celebrate the life of a rare human. Too bad there are so few Mandelas in the world. The only one I can think of to come close is the Dalai Lama. What a glorious man Mandela was and what a phenomenal legacy he left behind!

(95,337 posts)Although not unexpected, he was 95 years old so we were blessed to have him a part of our world for so long.
Mandela gave us hope that we can fight back even when being oppressed by the minority! His name will be remembered for generations to come whereas those who jailed him have already been forgotten.

(11,014 posts)I was fortunate to meet him in 2003 in Cape Town and was in awe of his humility and wisdom.
Two months ago, I tried to get an audience with him in Jo'burg but was unsuccessful.
No one living has inspired me more than Mandela.
Hope his legacy lives on and shines a new path in Africa and beyond.

(18,672 posts)Even if a good part of it was spent in prison, he inspired so many and motivated significant change. I remember and supported the Apartheid movement in the early '80's when I was in college. He was an inspiration and represented the Universal quest for freedom.
I was just reading not a week ago about the "Mandela Effect". Apparently many people believe he had died in prison years ago - but that branches off into some weird stuff. It's kind of like the Pierre Trudeau effect were some of us thought he had died in the late '80's. I think this honor oftentimes occurs to those who truly made a difference.
RIP, great man. And thank you for the inspiration that was your life.

(2,074 posts)As a South African who was somewhat involved in anti-apartheid politics as a student in South Africa in the late 80s/early 90s, this news is particularly poignant. I can still remember, like it was yesterday, when I was sitting in front of the television as Mr. Mandela was released on that memorable day. I can remember so well, a few years later, when we stood in line to vote, black and white, in South Africa's first democratic elections, and when, subsequently, this great man was sworn in as president of our beloved country. The years since (many of which I have spent in the US due to studies and later work, but I visit regularly and keep in touch with people there) have not been without its problems for South Africa, and sadly Mr. Mandela's successors have not been cut of the same cloth. But Madiba has shone like a beacon in the darkness, and he always will. May he now rest in eternal peace, a well deserved rest.
A great soul has passed.
Thank you, sir, for everything you sacrificed so that South Africa could become a better place for all its people.
