House Dem Leader Says No Budget Deal Unless Jobless Benefits Are Extended

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The leader of House Democrats says her rank and file won't support any year-end budget deal unless it includes plans to extend expiring unemployment benefits for long-term victims of the recession.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California made the comment today as senior lawmakers struggled elsewhere in the Capitol to find a compromise that would ease across-the-board cuts in the budget that both parties would like to eliminate.

Majority Republicans in the House have not ruled out extending the benefits that are due to begin expiring on Dec. 28, but say they have no plans to pursue legislation on their own.

President Barack Obama on Wednesday called on Congress to approve an extension, and House Speaker John Boehner today said he was looking for a White House proposal on the issue.

I am affected by the unemployment inaction. I already live with my wife in a small apartment with our grown daughter and grandaughter. The bank is down to $500. Car insurance, cell phone and a little food will drain that.

At 58 I have limited options and the stress is unbeareable.

I need a job! Where the fuck are the job creators?

Actually, big business is sitting on their projects due to the uncertainity generated by these douchebags in congress.

To hear people debate the war on Christmas as if that's important is simply astounding.

In closing:

RIP Nelson Mandela!

Get the Republicans on record as turning their backs on unemployed Americans and see what happens in the 2014 elections.

That's what I expect from the people whom are in the Democratic party, work for your constituents that gave you your position, not corporations.

*Bernie Sanders - not in the party but still fighting for the people.

I heard on PBS's Religion & Ethics that another, even deeper cut is planned.

But that was before Frankie One Stick spoke out. Maybe that will deter/shame them.

the goal of creating jobs for these people and the republicans in congress should be ashamed at themselves for not doing anything to try and help fix the problem.

See if it matters right this fucking moment.

Yes the root matters, but if it's going to take a while, why not ease the suffering.

Republicans need to fossilize away like the Dinosaurs. There is no reason for their existence.

I was agreeing with you.

"Problem is though the benefits are only bandaid that is slowing the bleeding". Jobless benefits have been always will be a bandaid. I was railing on the lack of jobs 8 + years ago, while I've seen jobs disappearing including my own, more free trade agreements being signed (2 by Obama), and corporations being coddled. Sure the R's are stone walling everything, of course. Have they ever done anything for the people, ever? Still here we are like nothing has happened. Sure there have been progress on other fronts but in the end, people need jobs to pay bills, Obamacare or not.

again agreeing with you. Sorry for the confusion.

Suggestion to Reid. Some of the bills the House sent to the Senate claim to be aimed at that. They most likely suck, but they can be fixed and sent back to the House. Stop playing the same game as the GOP. Be the adults in the room.

kabuki or some prelude to a bad bargain, where an extension of unemployment or two is traded for something even worse over all that is permanent.

Because it is clear the GOP will object to that. This is political posturing at its best. It may work but if it does not, there is no chance they will reject a half decent budget deal. This would hurt even more people.
