Bob Filner gets probation -- and his secrets are now public record

Source: LA Times

Hello probation. Goodbye dignity.

Monday's coda to the career implosion of former San Diego Mayor Bob Filner is yet another cautionary tale for powerful men: You could end up like Filner, jobless and disgraced, with your deepest secrets laid out in the cold, precise language of a probation officer’s report. Or you could keep your hands to yourself.

After pleading guilty to felony false imprisonment and misdemeanor battery, Filner was sentenced in a San Diego courtroom Monday: He will be on probation for three years, including three months in home confinement. He can’t run for office during his probation, must undergo mental health treatment and will give up part of his pension.

The probation report evaluates Filner and his misdeeds, including mitigating circumstances (no prior record) and aggravating circumstances (he took advantage of his elected position).

I've read somewhere that he kept being re-elected from a heavily gerrymandered safe Democratic district but that the guy he replaced was forced out by a sexual harassment scandal.

Someone had to be covering for him.

And Filner actually did not directly replace Demorat Jim Bates, who was accused of sexual harassment and lost to Duke Cunningham (who would resign nearly 15 years later due to corruption) in the 1990 House election for the San Diego district. Bates ran in the '92 primary but lost to Filner.

Yikes. Crooks all around.

Nowadays the Mexican border region in southeastern CA has its own congressional district.

That's the part of this stuff I never understand. I have no problem with doing so, neither do most people.

What the hell?

Just a rhetorical question, not interested in the laundry list of why some people think they have the right to mess with others.
