Miami - Singer and bassist Fernando Madina of the Spanish punk-rock band Reincidentes was detained on Friday at Miami airport en route to a concert in Quito, Ecuador. It took 48 hours for his family to finally learn where he was and why he had been detained.
The concert in Quito, Ecuador had to be postponed as Madina was unable to travel there in time to play.
La Vanguardia reported (in Spanish) that initially US authorities did not inform his family of the situation and they eventually had to get in touch with the Spanish Embassy in Washington to get more information.
According to the offices of Attraction Management, the situation was described as being "shameful" as there was no record of any complaint against Madina and that he "had done nothing to be stopped" at the airport.

The band apparently had a similar experience back in October 2010, en route to a gig in Colombia, and were also stopped at Miami airport.
In that incident it was the guitarist, Juan Manuel Rodriguez, who was arrested without explanation. Just as the band was about to cancel the concert, the musician was released, and apparently he had been mistaken for a criminal wanted by the FBI.

(18,402 posts)Was he really drunk and disorderly? Or not? Is the article trying to suggest he was arrested for political reasons? (If so, they failed to explain it.)
Sorry, I don't know this singer. Perhaps a bit more explanation would help us to understand the story.

(160,630 posts)They seem to believe it was political, as the same thing was done to another in the band who was arrested then released in the same town, after the authorities explained they had confused him with a criminal on the FBI wanted list.
US authorities have been known to hassle musicians from other countries, a habit going back for decades.

(67,782 posts)According to the article, in the "~snip~", he was arrested for "drunkenness and disturbing public order".
And THEN more of the article is posted about a detention of a DIFFERENT band member 3 years ago?
So something that happened 3 years ago to someone else is more important to point out than the reason for this arrest? Puzzling!

(160,630 posts)only just found out where he is.

(67,782 posts)"According to 20 Minutos (Spanish language), in transit from Miami to Quito, Madina was arrested, not detained, and stopped from getting on the plane with the other five members of the band. The reason for his arrest is apparently that he was "drunk and disorderly", according to Javier Pagalday, the deputy consol of the Spanish Consulate General in Miami."
"Twelve hours after the arrest, other members of the group contacted the immigration authorities of the State of Florida, airport police and the airline, among others, to try and find out what had happened to the singer."
"48 hours after the arrest, Madina's family reported his disappearance to the Spanish National Police as nothing had been heard of his whereabouts and they were unaware of his arrest."
So the other members of the band were there, but they didn't know what happened to him? They didn't think to tell his family that he'd been arrested?
He was arrested Friday, the family found out 48 hours later (Sunday), this is Tuesday. And even though the article clearly stated why he was arrested (pointed out by deputy consol of the Spanish Consulate General in Miami) it was more important to say why another band member was detained three years earlier?
It all just seems very strangely presented.

(25,592 posts)what will happen to them, if they get out of line.
This mistaken them for criminals is nothing but bullshit. The FBI knew who they were dealing with. The real reason was because it was probably just a training exercise.
