Extension of Farm Subsidies Rebuffed by Senate Democrats
Source: Bloomberg
An extension of U.S. agriculture subsidies to late January was rebuffed by Senate Democrats, who said they wont pass any plan sent to them by the House before the members leave Washington late this week.
Were not going to do an extension, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow, a Michigan Democrat, told reporters. If the House leadership would just stay through next week, like the Senate is staying, we would actually be able to get new five-year farm-policy legislation, she said.
House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas, an Oklahoma Republican, today proposed a bill that will extend to Jan. 31 the farm law that expired two months ago. He also will seek a House vote if lawmakers negotiating a five-year plan dont have an agreement by Dec. 13.

Stumbling Block
Cuts to food stamps, along with changes to crop insurance programs and other farm aid, have been stumbling blocks as lawmakers seek to resolve differences in Senate and House versions of a reauthorization of agricultural programs.

We're small family farmers, like many of the farmers where you and I live. In fact, the number of family farmers has been increasing. We can't get along without those subsidies.

(10,336 posts)farming state. Many of my friends have or grew up on farms, and a close friend married a farmer and they operate to this day. It must be difficult, to say the least, to hear some of this. I wish the "farms" could be distinguished between Big Corporate Mega Farms and smaller family farms for purposes of policy such as this. I am certainly conflicted about it, but I am pretty sure that is by design.

(29,798 posts)The people who need nutrition assistance can't get along without that help either. And not to minimize the consequences to you and yours, frankly, the failure to provide assistance puts them closer to real and immediate hunger than it does you.

(30,765 posts)Why would you think think that? Why are you making that assumption? Do you think we are overjoyed that the farm bill is being held hostage by greedy men who want to cut food assistance?
And if family farmers lose their farms and homes because of poor policies, how does that help them? How does it help to make them destitute and homeless?
I speak to my congressman every once in awhile. He is a stupid republican who does not listen, and blames everything on Democrats.
You are just one more DUer who does not understand anything about agriculture or farm policy, yet you think you have a right to judge and condescend to us.

(29,798 posts)But I do think you're worried about you own hide a heck of a lot more than you are worried about the hunger of the food stamp recipients. Your posts make that extremely clear.
I don't care if your congressman is a Republican, he's the one you should be attacking, not posters on an internet forum. In the time you've spent here you could have called AND written a letter telling the jerk how hard you are going to organize against him for creating this situation.
DUers didn't do it, HE did. If you can't figure that out...

(132 posts)until those 1940's milk subsidies kick in and even people NOT on food stamps will be baying at the moon about milk prices.
If everyone in Congress wasn't beholden to corn farm aid would not even be necessary. Increase the minimum wage and food stamps could be a thing of the past. Sometimes I feel like Charles Grodin in DAVE....give me a sandwich and the budget and I'll take care of it.
