UGH. SOMEONE had to do this nearly a year after Sandy Hook huh? And in a region not unfamiliar with school shootings.

(16,350 posts)My gosh! I heard some of the parents of Sandy Hook victims saying that better gun control was not the solution. It's, you know, society and mental health that needs to change. Meanwhile these incidents continue to happen and innocents are injured or killed, but guns above all are protected.

(32,064 posts)three Denver suburbs known nationally for shootings (this school is in Centennial) all BORDER EACH OTHER. Go to google maps and display them all at once (under the pop up menu under "traffic" select each city). sad.

(5,762 posts)Because I am close to some of them and I have heard no such statements. Sandy Hook Promise, one of the organizations founded by the families, is committed to common-sense solutions for gun owners AND people affected by mental illness.

If you have backup for your claim, I would be interested to see it.

Suck.
I know it's a lot to ask, but can we have a day, just one day, where we don't all rant about guns, and instead have a bit of calm introspection for the victims?
Just one day, and then we can go back to screaming at each other. Please.

(1,555 posts)I'm right down the street from here and it's another school like Columbine - mix of jocks, freaks, geeks, band/choir members, etc.
So far, 1 teen is at Littleton Hospital and there's is likely another victim and new ambulances have pulled up to the school.
My childhood best friend has a son who's not been accounted for and she's a fucking wreck; my niece was at the Aurora theater the night of that massacre and I'm so fucking sick of hearing of these incidents.
As I see more on TV, I'll post it.

(33,423 posts)Suicide most often, but these Amoklauf (running crazy) shootings are another manifestation of suicidal despair and anger.
How and why did the parents not notice their child's despair and anger?
How and why did this child have access to a firearm?
How and why did no one act to nip this in the bud?
If you have a firearm and a teenage boy in the house, YOU ARE THE ONES WHO CAN STOP THIS.

(36,063 posts)Clearly early information is always likely to be wrong.
But, that's a curiosity. What do librarians do that upset a child enough for the child to want to kill?
I suspect the answer is on social media and that because the name is not released we don't know what was said.

(33,982 posts)At least, out here. Computer facilities. Research. Every class, except perhaps Gym leverages the library heavily.
What could the librarian have done? Possibly told a disruptive student he or she is not welcome there anymore, due to behavior or something. Obviously just one of many forms of speculation.
I hope the severely injured student pulls through.

(36,063 posts)Not knowing what, if any, other roles that librarian engaged in at the school or what other interpersonal relationships existed, there are many possibilities.
I suspect we will have some answers to that in a few days.

(5,376 posts)This was back in the late 50s and 60s. As I just remarked to my spouse, back when I was growing up Colorado was such a pleasant place inhabited my mostly reasonable citizens. Now it seems like it's Crazyland. Really don't get it. Might note, however, that a high school in Oregon, not far from where we lived, was the scene of a school shooting by a student who got ahold of his parents' guns, killed them and proceeded to his high school where he opened fire on the students, killing two and wounding 25 others. Then there was the shooting at Clackamas Mall near Portland last year. Then came Sandy Hook...guess Crazyland is far more widespread than I once thought or could ever imagine.
Makes me very, very sad.

(32,064 posts)This is an unspeakable horror and something no child, no family should have to endure. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Arapahoe High School community and those affected by this senseless act of violence. We thank law enforcement and first responders for their swift work. All of Colorado is with you.

(11,014 posts)Anyone who wants to own a gun must undergo a pre-purchase psychological evaluation and annually thereafter at their sole cost and expense.
Also, no safe harbor for the gun manufacturers. Gun manufacturers should be liable for what their products do.

Hope the girl in the hospital can make a full recovery. Poor baby!
