New York City Losing Its Last Commercial Progressive Talk Radio Station

Source: Huffington Post

When WWRL 1600 AM turns into a Spanish-language music and talk radio station next week, New York City will lose its only remaining commercial progressive talk radio outlet.

Station employees first learned about the news in mid-December, with low advertising revenues blamed for the change, according to the New York Amsterdam News.

WWRL is owned by Access.1 Communications, a black-owned radio broadcasting company. The station has been around for 86 years and switched to its progressive programming format in 2006, increasing its presence as a forum for the LGBT community in the years since.

“It was a business decision,” John Campanario, host of the LGBT talk forum Out And About and a digital marketing executive for the station, told GBM News. "The antics of people like [right-wing talk show hosts] Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity have put advertisers off talk radio, across the spectrum. This is happening nationally.”

We need to encourage the use of more streaming radio and Non-profit radio stations. That's what they did to save progressive talk in Oregon and preserve it in Illinois.

KPFK has some really silly afternoon shows (New Agish self-improvement shows from what I can tell), but the news in the late afternoon, say 4 - 6 p.m. or so is really good. There are other good shows, but I try to avoid the self-improvement shows. Not that I think I am perfect, but that I prefer other methods to improve myself like self-discipline.

...owned by Clear Channel...they are switching over to Teabagger Radio on Jan 2, they're calling the new format, "The Patriot."

Drug addict/misogynist/pedophile Rush will be moving from "sister station" KFI to the phony Patriot, and will blather his spew, along with a slew of other sociopaths and scumbags, so KTLK, formerly the Air America affiliate, and lately "Your Voice," will be history.

Not sure what will become of KFI, but apparently at least one of the local hosts on KTLK - David Cruz - will be moving over to KFI.

(To clarify, KTLA is a Los Angeles local TV station, channel 5.)

And in Albuquerque there are KKOB stations in AM and FM and and KOB TV station.

Houston has a KTRH AM station and KTRK TV station.

since the stream is free so i doubt they make any money other than the ads on the site. another plus is that he owns 3 fm frequencies and a day time clear channel frequency.

Thank (god) for the internet and Sirius/XM. I live just outside of Atlanta and there is no progressive radio talk what-so-ever. They have tried several times to get a station going .. but being that it's in a red state .. and very corporatist controlled, they just can't generate enough revenue nor did they ever have a strong enough signal to reach further than say twenty miles. So there you have it. I am really surprised NYC would not have enough support for a progressive station.

Conservatives listen to the radio because they want to confirm their prejudices. Liberals, however, prefer non-commercial radio programming like NPR or other highbrow media like books or periodicals. There's a reason why so many redundant right wing talk, sports, and religious stations exist on the airwaves. They have audiences ready and willing to listen.

The Reality is Progressive Talk on FCC Regulated Stations is a dying form. Where the FUTURE of Progressive Talk is:

WEBCAST, VIDEOCAST and PODCAST --- and SATELLITE RADIO

Why?
The Corporations (Unclear Channel, Radio One, etc) do NOT control the message.
The Host is Free to express views, opinions and facts without "The Man" demanding a changing the message to please the Wall Street Investors.
The Host/Executive Producer/Network OWNS lock, stock and barrel the show.
The Revenue the show makes is NOT sliced, diced and split six ways times Sunday with the Corporate owners of FCC regulated radio stations.

Now what followers of Progressive Talk need to do:
First download the Mobile App for either: Stitcher, iTunes, Soundcloud or Tune It In -- This way you can listen to your favorite Progressive Web, Video or Podcast anywhere, anytime.

Support Progressive Web, Video or Podcasts by either giving GLOWING REVIEWS on the mediums noted above, telling others were to find Progressive Talk on the Web and DONATING to keep Progressive Talk a GROWING MEDIUM on the web.

Sponsor if you support Progressive Causes One or More of the Web, Pod or Videocast on the Web if you have a small, medium or large business.

Blog Talk Radio is another place to find Progressive Talk Radio. Our Podcast Independent Underground Radio LIVE has been running strong since 2010 and last month received over 95K downloads alone, with well over 225K for the year thus far.

Radio is a dying breed. Satellite Radio and Web based Video, Pod or Webcast is where the future Progressive Talk, is.

Because Corporations that OWN the FCC Operated networks want to in their opinion "drown out" the Progressive message reaching the masses. The alternatives are Satellite, Web, Video and Podcasting. Until the Fairness Doctrine comes back from the FCC 777 file, it is what it is.

I flip the AM dial around in the daytime and Rush is all over the dial. It's still about 24/7 in most of our southern Ohio counties. It is why counties where so many people are poor there continue to be poor, they're being brainwashed by propaganda that would make Goebbels proud in Hell.

Stephanie Miller hinted last week she may be picked up by another LA radio outlet, we'll see. In any event she can still be seen and heard on several platforms, including XM/Sirius and soon Free Speech TV. It's cool Steph will be doing it from her home.

As for AM, it will still be here for the foreseeable future, so time to step up George Soros and other rich liberals.

25. As Norman Goldman suggested, progressive talk should go to FM.
Sun Dec 29, 2013, 12:58 AM
Dec 2013

Companies invest more in FM radio than AM. For instance, CBS has launched new FM, live-and-local sports stations in Baltimore, Dallas, DC, Detroit, and some other places.

Theoretically for NY I would propose a dual AM/FM "WLIB" prog talk station on the current WLIB-AM 1190 and one of these FM's:
102.7 (currently adult contemporary)
106.7 (ditto)
96.3 (tropical)
97.9 (ditto)

Along with his long-standing Radio show aired out of, Chicago owned exclusively by a wealthy Progressive owner. The realities are the realities and Progressive Hosts across the nation are realizing a move from Exclusively FCC Operated Corporate stations (Clear Channel, Radio One, Etc.) is necessary for survival. It is what it is unless the Fairness Doctrine is pulled from the FCC's 777 file.
