Hewlett-Packard to cut 5,000 more jobs (Bringing Total to 34,000)

Source: Reuters

Tue Dec 31, 2013 1:40pm EST

(Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co said it would cut 5,000 more jobs, bringing the total number of layoffs to 34,000, or 11 percent of its workforce.

The company said in a regulatory filing on Monday that it would record a charge of $4.1 billion in 2014, up from its prior estimate of $3.6 billion. (r.reuters.com/kyf75v)

HP is striving to get back to growth through job cuts and focusing on businesses with longer-term potential such as enterprise services.

HP had estimated that it would cut about 29,000 jobs through fiscal year 2014.

and you can't work on a phone or tablet. Once Windows 8 goes away I imagine the market will pick up again.

finance charges from our meager little existence and deliver them to the wealthy using a tablet to move things among the clouds
quite easily now, thank you. Screens and keyboards will suffice for a few others, with a few 'droid phones.

And since the majority of new jobs don't need a computer as much as they need to be able to avoid hot grease, fold bedsheets, and empty bedpans, we won't need as many computers anyway.

(Now if they can figure out how to capitalize off of that damn linux user who is doing much of this away from their control, they can
own nearly every last drop )

http://www.macrumors.com/2013/12/31/entry-level-mac-pro-offers-comparable-pricing-versus-oem-pcs-diy-systems-more-affordable/

When comparing the entry-level 3.7GHz quad-core Mac Pro with dual AMD FirePro D300s to both the similarly specced HP Z420 and the Lenovo ThinkStation S30, Anandtech found the Mac Pro to be competitively priced at $3248 (priced with AppleCare) vs. $4490 for the HP and $4373 for the Lenovo.

11. Being a CEO takes very little talent; anyone could do it...

1) Become a member of the CEO club (who you know is more important than
what you know)

2) Land a job in a Fortune 500 company based on your connections.

3) Lay off thousands of workers.

4) Squeeze out more production and reduce the benefits of the workers who remain.

5) Pocket all the money from the increased profits (all done with smoke and mirrors) and stock options.

6) Accept accolades like "CEO of the Year" awards, and then laugh to yourself.

7) Fiddle about while the company plummets to the ground. Blame "Gubmint Regulations" for your woes.

8) Put on your golden parachute and jump out, just before it all crashes and burns.

9) Find a new position in another company and repeat the cycle.

14. Does HP still have 34,000 people to fire?

Every time I read an article about HP, it's usually something about 30,000 jobs being lost. At some point, there will be no more people to cut.
